MCI reluctant to increase seats of IGGMC, Akola GMC

Nagpur Sep  10
MCI files SLP against HC\'s August 28 order relating to more seats at IGMC, Med. college Akola Staff Reporter Medical Council of India (MCI) has approached the Supreme Court against the order of Nagpur bench of Bombay High Court dated August 28, asking it to sympathetically consider the issue of increasing intake of IGGMC (Nagpur) and Akola GMC by 50 seats each. The special leave petition has been filed before the Apex Court and matter will come up for hearing next week. In view of this development, a division bench consisting of Justice Bhushan Gavai and Justice Z A Haq has postponed the hearing of a PIL filed by C H Sharma and others. Nagpur bench of Bombay High Court in its order dated August 28 had noted that main deficiency pointed out regarding the IGGMC not having girls\' hostel and multi-purpose buildings, had already been removed and directed the Chief Secretary to tell the MCI that these buildings have come up and these will be put to use ‘immediately’. Regarding the GMC, Akola, reason for not increasing its intake from 100 to 150 has been that the said College has not completed 10 years of existence, which is short by few days only. Therefore, the High Court had directed the State Govt. to re-submit proposal for increase in intake at the College in Akola, on or prior to August 30 next and had asked MCI to consider these proposals sympathetically and in the light of undertaking to be submitted by the State Government. The Court had asked the MCI to take positive view, keeping in mind the wider interest of the students in this region. According to sources, the Chief Secretary had furnished the undertaking on August 30 and MCI considered the proposal of Akola GMC, but was not inclined to revisit the case of IGGMC due to persistent failure of State Government to honour its commitment to undertake modernisation. According to Amicus Curiae Jugalkishor Gilda, the IGGMC had lost 50 MBBS seats offered by Central Government as one-time measure to all 10 years old Government run Medical Colleges with intake of 100 seats, because its modernisation process turned out to be a non-starter. Through its order of August 28 last, the Court had also given expression to its considered view that \"the officers of the State Govt. have committed contempt of this Court by not complying with an undertaking given to the Court reflected in the order of the HC of September 22, 2010. In view of this, the Court had issued notice to the State Chief Secretary and the Principal Secretaries of the Medical Education, Finance and Public Works Departments to explain as to why no action for contempt of Court should be taken against them.
