NO MEDDLING

ARMY Chief General Bipin Rawat has reiterated India’s well guarded philosophy of non-interference in other countries’ internal affairs and not having territorial ambitions. Speaking to strategic affairs experts and defence personnel in Male, General Rawat has said that as a responsible emerging power India will continue to fulfill its regional and global security obligations and would never harbour any territorial ambitions. This has been a long-standing philosophy. At the same time when its security and souvereignty are challenged it keeps its options open to respond in a befitting manner. But even that is for a limited purpose of teaching a lesson to the offender of the country’s dignity. Even in case of developmental cooperation with other countries India has never tried to usurp the rights of the host nation. Beyond meaningful cooperation India has never nursed hegemonistic ambitions. That is why India’s footprints are found far and wide the world over. Even the country’s defence preparedness is in response to the hostile neighbours.

SC STUMPED!

THE manner in which the Supreme Court had dealt with the restructuring of the Indian Cricket Board four years ago had given hope to the cricket fans that the BCCI will be cleansed once and for all. In total contrast, the present scenario in the world’s richest cricket board is filthy and messy, leaving a huge question mark on the apex court’s handling of the entire matter. In the first place, the top court could have avoided dismantling the basic structure of the sports body since it had a minimal connection in the spot-fixing scandal that rocked the IPL in 2013. SC had done an exemplary service to punish the guilty after extensive probe and convictions. But holding the basic structure responsible for corrupt practices was not quite expected. Yet, the reforms suggested by the Lodha Committee were supposed to bring the change SC had sought. All that has gone totally awry and the reforms have fallen flat. What is on offer is another way of establishing fiefdom in the State associations. The reforms process has turned into a farce leaving SC in a quandary.
