Tulsibag mishap: Cops detain teenage driver, arrest SUV owner

A teenage driver was detained by Kotwali police on Saturday for mowing a mother-son duo by Scorpio SUV in Tulsibag area of Mahal on Friday night. Police Inspector Dhnyaneshwar Bhosale of Kotwali Police Station informed ‘The Hitavada’ that the teenager and the Scorpio vehicle owner Surendra Dhawade (24), a resident of Vaygaon Harde village of Wardha District had come to city for shopping of spare parts of the vehicle. They stopped the SUV at Tulshibag road to get ‘Kharra’ from a paan shop at 9 pm. The teenager took control of the wheels after having ‘Kharra’ and pressed the accelerator.
 
While passing through Tulshibagh road, he noticed a vehicle coming from the opposite direction. When the driver tried to swerve, the vehicle mowed the pedestrians in the process, said police. Soon after the accident, the teenager sped away from the spot with the vehicle. Dhawade also was in the vehicle when the accident occurred, the police said.
 
The deceased were identified as Shabana Begam Mohd Jahid (30) and her son Mohd Arahan Mohd Jahid (6). The teenage driver was driving the SUV without license, said PI Bhosle. The mother-son duo and another member of their family had gone to enjoy ice-cream at a shop after dinner. An offence under Sections 279 and 304 (a) of the Indian Penal Code was registered against the vehicle owner and the teenager.
