To overcome the issue of lack of expert staff in hospitals run by Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), first it was Public Health Department and now All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has come forward to strengthen services at civic hospitals. As per the agreement between NMC, AIIMS and Tata Trusts, the national-level hospital would be conducting Outpatient Department (OPD) two days a week on compulsory basis. This will improve health services at NMC-run hospitals. NMC had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with AIIMS, Nagpur, and Tata Trusts. Tata Trusts, known for providing technical as well as financial assistance, will play an important role.

Healthcare facilities in the city have improved a lot and now with AIIMS there is a scope for further improvement in the services. Municipal Commissioner Abhijit Bangar, AIIMS Director Major General Dr Vibha Dutta and Tata Trusts Director (Health) HSD Srinivas signed the MoU. To begin with, AIIMS is starting OPD on Tuesdays and Fridays at Nandanvan Urban Primary Health Centre. NMC Health Officer Dr Sarita Kamdar, who took lot of efforts in streamlining this project, said, the motive behind this project is to improve the health services in city.

It will also cater to the needs of the people in their own areas. They don’t have to come to tertiary care centres for minor health problems. It will also ease the load of Tertiary centres, pointed out Dr Kamdar. On Tuesdays, the OPD of Paediatrician will be held while on Fridays gyanaecologists will attend female patients, informed Dr Kamdar. AIIMS will help in preparing competency matrix for centre’s staff, designing of training module, capacity building of staff. Tata Trusts will help in the proper implementation of technical aspects provided by AIIMS. The same modus operndi will be applied in all 26 UPHCs in city.
