Onion prices soar to Rs 80 per kg

The onion prices have shot up to the highest level of season in State capital. Onion is being sold between Rs 80 and Rs 100 per kg in retail market. The swollen onion prices have started to give shock to people. It was during the rainy season that onion price reached upto Rs 40 to Rs 50 per kg. And now the rates are ranging between Rs 80 to Rs 100 per kg. Onion is literally bringing tears into the eyes of people. A shopkeeper selling onion in Misrod area told that people have started to purchase less onion as rates have reached to highest ever so far.
 
Meanwhile, women from middle and poor class are having a tough time in managing the kitchen budget.A Government employee of clerical level said that ever since onion prices shot up the sky, he stopped purchasing the onion. Wholesale onion trader of Navi Baag Vegetable Market, Fazil told ‘The Hitavada’ that new onion supply is not coming to Bhopal and this is the reason behind soared onion prices. In wholesale, onion is being sold at Rs 60 per kg and when this onion is sold by retail vendors then price increases by Rs 10 to Rs 20 per kilogram.
 
“The rainfall activities have damaged onion in Maharashtra and Karnataka and hence supply from these two states have been affected. On the other hand, local onion of Madhya Pradesh has been also damaged by rainfall activities. It will take at least a month to get adequate onion supply. Till then, onion prices are likely to remain high,” he told. Notably, rains are still continuing in sundry parts of Madhya Pradesh. As far as onion prices are concerned then normally onion is sold at Rs 10 per kg but this time, it has broken all old records to reach till Rs 80 per kg.
