MCU buckles before mounting pressure

Makhanlal Chaturvedi National University of Journalism and Communication, on Wednesday, finally gave its nod for appearance in exam to two girl students who were sitting on demonstration since Tuesday evening. Earlier, university had denied permission to both girls by citing their poor attendance.

Shreya Pandey and Manu Sharma, third semester students of MAMC Department, braved the biting cold staged dharna outside University gate from Tuesday evening onwards as they were not allowed to appear in exam due to their poor attendance record. They continued their dharna throughout the night and even on Wednesday as well.When Member of Parliament from Bhopal constituency Pragya Singh Thakur came to know about the dharna of both of them, she visited the MCU campus and tried to meet agitating girl students and to extend her support to them. On getting the wind of this development, NSUI workers also rushed to spot and started to raise slogans against Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur. They filled the air with slogans ‘Sadhvi Pragya go back’. The drama continued for almost half an hour. Bajrang Dal also jumped into the support of agitating girl students.
 
In the meantime, MP Pragya Singh Thakur assured both agitating girl students that she will take their matter till Governor Lalji Tandon. Amidst this, NSUI and Bajrang Dal continued to raise slogans against each other. On knowing about the ruckus, police reached university.
 
Special re-examination for both: Makhanlal University issued two orders after conversation with both girl students vis Shreya and Manu.
 
The orders stated that a special examination would be conducted for the both girl students during May-June and that they would have to give examinations
 
of third and fourth semester collectively. But the students will have to sign an affidavit that they would maintain their attendance in the ensuing semester. The other order said a committee would be formed to probe the misconduct of Head of Department, Mass Communication, Sanjeev Gupta with both the girl students. On being contacted over the issue, Rector of MCU, Shrikant Singh said “The girl students are not being allowed to appear for the exams this semester but they will be giving examinations of this semester along with papers of next semester exams. They will be allowed to appear only if they are having required attendance in the ensuing semester.” Sadhvi Pragya speaks to agitating girl students: Talking to the journalists here at the university, Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur said she was against the arbitrary behaviour of the university administration and that she would talk to the governor in this regard. Meanwhile, social media was abuzz with the rumours that Governor Lalji Tandon has issued directive to varsity’s Vice-Chancellor Deepak Tiwari but university management denied such thing. Earlier, Pragya Singh Thakur added that the NSUI workers were here to create chaos. Whereas NSUI state spokesperson, Suhrid Tiwari said, “We were not against the two girl students, instead we were against the Malegaon bomb blast accused, Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur who was in the campus only because of her political interest.”
