FINALLY the first step towards establishing the office of anti-corruption ombudsman has been taken by recommending the name of former judge of the Supreme Court Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghose. On Sunday the high level committee comprising Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi, Chief Justice of Indian Justice Ranjan Gogoi, Lok Sabha Speaker Mrs. Sumitra Mahajan and eminent jurist Mr. Mukul Rohatgi decided on the name of Justice Ghose. Thus social activist Mr. Anna Hazare’s prolonged agitation for the purpose has come to a fruition. It took five long years for the first step to be taken towards appointment of the Lokpal at the Centre. The Lokpal Act was passed in 2013 and was notified in January 2014. After that, since there was no progress towards implementation of the act, both by the states and Centre, Mr. Anna Hazare had again launched hunger strike at his native village Ralegan Siddhi. This seems to have worked. The National Democratic Alliance Government thus has fulfilled its promise to the people to get tough with corruption.

ALL IN THE MIND

BEFORE entering the World Cup in England as Indian players get into the Twenty20 mode through the Indian Premier League (IPL) the buzzword among the teams is managing workload of England-bound players. Against this backdrop, the words of wisdom by legendary spinner Shane Warne have come as a mirror to the younger generation. Putting his point of view on workload in his characteristic blunt style, Warne has claimed his generation played more cricket than the present crop and also found time to improve their game. Though the current cricketers have to juggle between three formats of the game, the argument that the players get little time to work on their skills looks flawed. For, the amount of multi-day cricket Warne and his contemparories played during their time was much more taxing than the slam-bam formats. It all depends upon a player’s attitude to keep himself a step ahead of the others through skill improvment. Virat Kohli is a prime example of a perfect attitude of a learner. Even with a busy calendar Kohli has always raised the bar.
