Development cannot be achieved unless the benefits of modern technology reaches rural population. This is the major goal in mind, while working in Saikheda in Saunsar taluka of Chhindwada district of Madhya Pradesh. This was stated by Dr Sudhir Meshram, who recently joined G H Raisoni University at Saikheda. Dr Meshram, founder Head of Rajiv Gandhi Biotechnology Centre of RTM Nagpur University and former Vice-Chancellor of North Maharashtra University, Jalgaon, is laying greater emphasis on taking modern scientific knowledge to farmers in the region.

Dr Meshram has special affection towards welfare of farmers and changing arid land into productive one. He has done it successfully while working with Rajiv Gandhi Biotechnology Centre (RGBC). During discussion with ‘The Hitavada’, Dr Meshram stated that the University is in the process of development. Infrastructural development is in progress. The students are from Chhindwada district and also from neighbouring cities from Maharashtra, like Nagpur, Amravati and Chandrapur. Adequate hostel facility is available for boys and girl students. With emphasis on development in agriculture sector, Dr Meshram also has plans to collaborate with RGBC, Global Biotech Forum and other department of RTM Nagpur University. The Raisoni University is autonomous and has introduced courses in law, agricultural sciences, engineering, commerce and management and pharmaceutical sciences.

The population from rural area will be benefited from extension programmes of these faculties. Besides handling the academic and administrative responsibilities as the VC, Dr Meshram has also expressed concern over employability of the students. He spoke about introducing skill development, understanding economy of the nation and also ignorance of rural population about several issues. The students will be groomed to understand the issues and have humanitarian approach to whatever they do. Some areas of the district is facing water scarcity. Management of water resources will be of prime importance. The students will be useful in understanding the problem and work out solutions to it. Dr Meshram appeared determined to help the farmers in Chhindwada district in understanding the process of development and participate in it. Earlier he has done for tribal population in Nanudurbar, when he was VC of North Maharashtra University. He also had organised training programmes for farmers of remote areas at RGBC, when he was the Director.
