Faulty road engineering major cause of mishaps in city as DCP Gajanan Rajmane calls upon organisation to foot in financially and socially to help streamline traffic movement at dark spots

Traffic Control Branch of Nagpur city police have identified 43 accident-prone hot spots where more than 25 accidents were reported during last year. Among them, Manewada Square on Ring Road has topped the list where 83 accidents had occurred during the year. The list was published by Deputy Commission of Police (DCP) Traffic Gajanan Rajmane after carrying out data analysis exercise. The cops took into consideration numbers of major accidents, minor accidents and fatal and based on that the spots are graded as per the risk involved. The police have prepared a list of more than 226 accident-prone spots and of them, 43 have been identified as the hot spots. DCP Rajmane informed The Hitavada that faults of road engineering is the major cause in road mishaps.

The roads and squares are formed without studying the movement of the vehicles. Hence vehicular traffic faces chaos and in the confusion among rider accidents occur at these places. “The traffic police officials would study each spot to identify the reason behind the accidents so that corrective measures can be taken to reduce the risk,” he further said. A detailed report on actions that are needed at risk prone spots is under preparation with thrust on bringing down numbers of accidents. Even temporary interventions could work as a solution,” the DCP stated. If number of mishaps are reduce, the spots would be turn into white,” he hopefully said. Elaborating on reason of accidents, DCP Rajmane said that people are always in a hurry while driving on the road and this is true in more than 50 per cent of cases.

However if proper road engineering measures are undertaken and traffic movement is properly regulated precious lives could be saved. “Traffic movement needs to be framed out in a desired manner and cut down any scope for any misadventure on part of any of the road users.

Social activists should adopt these spots

DCP Gajanan Rajmane has appealed social organisations in city to adopt each of these hot spots and undertake corrective road engineering measures, including barricading of roads, pasting of radium strips and conducting awareness programmes. “The traffic police are short of revenue to undertake such massive measures. If social organisation come forward it would immensely benefit the society,” he said.
