Police bust international-gang indulged in cheating women

With the arrest of two persons including a Nigerian national, Raipur police on Monday claimed to have busted an international-gang indulged in cheating women by befriending them on social media platform, police said. “Raipur police arrested two persons including Nigerian citizen identified as Charli Magane Franz Sin (40) and his Live In partner Linda (30), a native of Manipur, in connection with forgery of around Rs 9.33 lakh. The Nigerian with the help of his female partner cheated a 49-year-old woman of Raipur on pretest of marrying her,” said Additional Superintendent of Police (City) Prafull Kumar Thakur. The ASP (City) further added that a police team has arrested the accused duo from Delhi after camping there for around a week.
 
From the possession of arrested Nigerian, police team has recovered three laptops, four mobile handsets, one passport, one pen-drive, three bank passbooks, Aadhaar card and a PAN card. The accused has promised the victim of taking her to Britain after marriage. On the lure of marriage and assured foreign nationality, the accused has managed to get around Rs 9.33 lakh deposited in separate bank accounts in multiple installments. Shedding more details about modus-operandi of the crime, ASP Thakur said “the accused has created a fake Facebook account by introducing himself as citizen of Britain for targeting married women. With the help of fake Facebook account, the accused in 2018 befriended a married woman in Raipur identified as Dipali Tandon.
 
With increasing proximity, the duo started having chat on messaging application ‘Whatsapp’. As the friendship turns stronger, the accused proposed her for marriage and also promised her to take Britain after marriage. On the lure of VISA and foreign nationality, the accused duped the victim woman of Rs 9.33 lakh.”
 
With similar modus-operandi, the accused has cheated around 100 women across the country, said ASP Thakur. The crime came to light when the victim realized that she has been cheated and her money will not be refunded following which a complaint was lodged with Civil Lines police station recently, said ASP (City).On the complaint of victim, police registered an offence against the unidentified youth under Section 420 and 409 of Indian Penal Code (IPC), which amounting to cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property and criminal breach of trust, police said.
