Prime accused of gas tragedy was sent off like a guest during Rajiv Govt: Defence Minister

Defence Minister reacts on Rajiv Gandhi row

PM Narendra Modi has every right to question misrule during Rajiv Gandhi’s regime. The former Prime Minister became a martyr in an unfortunate incident but that does not mean that corruption and misrule during his tenure cannot be questioned

DEFENCE Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi became a martyr in an unfortunate incident but that does not mean that corruption and misrule happened during his tenure cannot be questioned. Recalling Bhopal Gas Tragedy, the Defence Minister said that it was during Rajiv Gandhi’s tenure that the prime accused of gas tragedy Warren Anderson was sent off like a guest. Sitharaman was addressing a press conference in the State capital on Thursday.

On being asked that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has accused former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi of misusing INS Viraat for personal reasons, she said, “It is known to everyone that how Congress blatantly misused Army, Navy and Air Force and this is in public domain. She charged Congress of shedding crocodile tears.” The Minister defended Prime Minister Narendra Modi for questioning use of Navy warship INS Viraat during vacation of Rajiv Gandhi by saying that he deserves every right to raise the question. Replying to another question on the Congress accusing BJP of cashing in surgical strike, she said that she would not like to comment on previous surgical strikes (during Congress tenure) and if they had ever happened, then why the Congress Government do not speak up.

“If we speak then why Me Too is becoming necessary,” she quipped. When asked about how BJP is boasting Army’s action against terrorists while during Atal Behari Vajpayee’s Government, terrorist Masood Azhar was released, Sitharaman said that at that time, all party meeting was held and it was a collective decision. On Balakot air strike, she said that the Government did not release figures of casualties but the facts is in public domain. Moreover, it is under the governance of Modi Government that the country is secure as there has been effective control on infiltration bid too.

Even terrorists are using tunnels for infiltration. Modi Government has zero tolerance. Unfinished agenda of Pakistan is being replied strongly. Coming down heavily on Rahul Gandhi for trying to corner Modi Government on Rafale issue, the Defence Minister said Rahul Gandhi made accusations without proof and later he realised that his tiger ride is going no way. Now, he does not know how to alight from that tiger ride.
