Under the campaign to save the life-giving Indravati River of Bastar, thousands of people from the villages around took out a ‘Padyatra’ on Thursday morning. The ‘Padyatra’ was started from Maa Danteshwari temple situated at Sirhasar Chowk and ended at Bhejapadar village situated at Odisha border while going through various prominent areas.

The campaign was started with the support of the villagers as well as other residents of the town. The villagers participating in the padyatra raised slogans “Indravati Bachao, Bastar Bachao” and they were given a rousing welcome by the residents living near the bank of the river. The participants informed that the Padyatra will continue for 10-12 days until it reaches Chitrakoot. They also said “depleting water level in Indravati river is a threat to future”.

A pedestrian informed that the main objective behind taking out the Padyatra is to draw the attention of both Chhattisgarh and Odisha state governments so that the Odisha government provide 45 percent of water to Bastar from Katiguda dam because Indravati is the only river that provides water to the people of Bastar. Along with this, Indravati River is one of the major sources for water at Divisional Headquarters Jagdalpur.
