The Board of Studies of Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University (RTMNU) is facing difficulties in finalising optional subjects under the ambitious ‘Swayam’ scheme of University Grants Commission. Meetings of 56 Board of Studies (BoS) and 37 Ad hoc committees were held on May 8 and 9. The main issue for discussion was selecting optional subject from regular syllabus for making available Swayam subject for the students. Although the students have been offered wide rage of subjects, selecting one paper from the regular syllabus, as option for Swayam subject, is difficult. The UGC has listed 41 subjects, for students from all the faculties.

The students have option to select any one, which may not be a subject from his faculty. The college will not be required to conduct classes for the subject selected by the students. A student has to appear for the examination through self-study. The examination will be conducted on-line by the UGC and valuation will also be done by the experts appointed by the UGC.

The self-study has been named ‘Swayam’. The BoS during its meetings had to only select the subject against which ‘Swayam’ subject would be selected. The marks granted by the UGC will have to be included in the marksheet issued by the University. Although selecting any ‘Swayam’ subject is not mandatory for any student, the option has been made to the students to help the students from any field to think out of the box. The subject, the student wishes to study may not fit in the frame of the University syllabus for the stream or course he or she is studying. The programme has been launched with basic aim of improving skills of the students. Careful selection of the subject would help the student in getting additional knowledge of subject, beyond his selected course.
