47 security men injured in J&K as mob pelts stones over rape of 3-yr-old girl in Valley

“The three-year-old girl in Bandipora was allegedly raped by a local boy at a village in Sumbal area on May 9.”
FORTY-SEVEN security personnel were injured in Jammu and Kashmir’s Baramulla district when stone pelting mobs went on the rampage following the rape of a three-year-old in Bandipora. At least one officer was in critical condition. An official statement said an Assistant Commander of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) was hit on the head by a stone during the clashes and he sustained a critical injury. “Seven miscreants were also injured but all are stable,” police said. The mobs took to the streets to denounce the horrific rape in Bandipora district last week.
The accused has already been arrested. A police statement said: “Miscreants pelted stones on forces deployed on National Highway at Mirgund, Chainabal, Harthrath, Singhpora, Jheel bridge, Kripalpora Payeen and Hanjiwera areas of Baramulla, resulting in injuries to 47 security forces personnel including one Assistant Commandant of SSB 2nd Battalion who was hit on his head. “Utmost restraint was maintained by forces on ground. However about 7 miscreants got injured (and) are all stable.” Clashes also occurred at a dozen other places between the security forces and stone throwing mobs during the day.
In Badgam district, 20 youths were injured in clashes with the security forces. Police sources said that the three-year-old girl in Bandipora was allegedly raped by a local boy at a village in Sumbal area. They said that the incident took place at Malikpora, Trehgam area of Sumbal in Bandipora district. Following the complaint police arrested the accused, identified as Tahir Ahmad Mir (20), son of Abdul Rehman Mir resident of Malikpora, Trehgam, Sumbal. Over the past week, Kashmir Valley has been witnessing unrest and protests over the rape of the three-year-old on May 9. Police have reportedly arrested the accused, who hails from the same area. Earlier on Monday, Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik expressed pain on the extremely heinous incident of rape of the minor girl in Bandipora and directed the police to “ensure culprit gets exemplary punishment for this shameful act”.
Former Chief Ministers Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti have also condemned the incident, calling for speedy justice. Mufti took to Twitter to say she was “mortified” to hear about the rape and said in “times like these, Shariah law seems apt so that such paedophiles are stoned to death.” Omar Abdullah too posted on Twitter and called the rape “a travesty.” Tagging the Jammu and Kashmir Police in the tweet, he wrote: “Must ensure a speedy investigation with only one consideration and that is to identify the guilty, prepare a watertight case and ensure exemplary punishment to those responsible.”
Medical exam of ‘rapist’ shows that he is not minor: PRELIMINARY medical examination of a youth accused of raping a three-year-old girl in Jammu and Kashmir’s Bandipora district has shown that he is not a juvenile, police said on Monday. “We are treating the accused as a major and not as a juvenile,” a senior police official told PTI. He said the preliminary medical examination of the accused, who has been arrested by the police, suggests that he is an adult.
“The doctors have given an opinion that he is around 20-years-old,” the official said. He said the police have also detained the principal of a school, who issued a birth certificate for the accused showing his date of birth as 23 July, 2009. “The principal is under the custody and is being questioned,” the official said. He said the police are investigating the case and will take it to the logical conclusion.
