Steel city sees a dip of over 10 pc in CGPET students

With 2,833 candidates appeared for Chhattisgarh Pre Engineering Test (CGPET) this year in twin cities of Durg as well as Bhilai, there was a dip of over 10% and one of lowest students’ appearance in this exam in last 15 years. In last year, around 3,630 students of the twin cities appeared for the examination. Every year, CGPET witnessed 10 to 12 examination centers due to large number of students’ appearance but this time due to poor registration, only 6 examination centers were allotted in twin cities. Meanwhile, CGPPHT for pharmacy has seen a rise of candidates as 1688 ones were appeared in the examination in twin cities this year as against of 1611 students appeared in it last year.
 
According to experts, the dip in appear in the examination is an indicator of dwindling popularity of science courses, especially engineering. ‘Students are looking for avenues other than engineering,” said RK Sharma, educationist as well as career counselor. He also said that while many students are opting out of engineering owing to lack of employment opportunities.
 
However students have mixed reaction about this examination and many of them were view that unlike of other engineering entrance examinations, CGPET covered syllabus of only class 12th and no questions from curriculum of class 11 were asked in the paper that consisted of three sections of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. ‘The paper was easy as well as objective. The questions were not time consuming and we have attempted all of them in stipulated three hours of time period’ asserted Rohit, Arjun and Preet, candidates who appeared in this examination from Rungta Group of College, Bhilai.
