Lot of talk is on on waste management. Solutions, too, are suggested. Local bodies also are drafting rules. But not much is being done on practical basis. Of course, there are groups who do come with innovations and try to sensitise people about them. Likewise, a group of students from final year, Automobile Engineering at Government Polytechnic addressed the issue. They have invented recycling and disposal of automobile material into office furniture. Rapid growth of population and rise in vehicles in developing countries in the last two decades have left a legacy of widespread environmental pollution. Waste management is one of the most emerging issues all over the world. This is because of the large amount of waste that is being generated daily and the impact of such waste is hazardous for the environment and living beings.

Waste management is the organised way of managing the waste through pathways to guarantee that they are disposed off with attention to least negative impact to the environment. With the rapidly increasing volume of vehicles, there is a parallel need to increase waste management initiatives by Governments across the world and also of modern facilities for reuse and recycling of waste materials like metal, solvents, batteries, plastics etc. when the vehicle reaches its end of life. Considering all these aspects, the team of students of Government Polytechnic namely Prakalp Chahande, Lokesh Dabre, Saurabh Sahu, Ashphak Pathan, Rahul Pashine and Abhay Chandel under the guidance of Prof. Samir Telang identified various automobile components such as tyres, crankshaft, camshaft, engine assembly, connecting rod, lower arm, knuckle, wheel disc and other common automobile waste. After the identification of components focused on product design considering recycle not only includes raw material selection and application of technology and time, but also upgradation of single parts and components of furniture. The automobile engineering department tried to build furniture from different pieces of recycled materials which is economic and environmentally friendly. Telang said, “Students well thought-out that recycling standard for designing explained from the first.

The following standards must be observed in components and parts that are designed to recycle that are 1. Use of pure and recyclable materials. 2. Considered the ergonomics of the furniture. 3. Using composite materials that are recycled easily and 4. Using appropriate connecting methods such as plug in instead of screws, finally, using good quality used auto materials or recycled ones.” By using specific process, waste production can be separated in to primary compound such as: plastic shell, foam rubber and plastic substrate.

After understanding these factors, team of students finally invented the office furniture from automobile waste with the excellent performance including robust design and ergonomics compatibility in all the respect. Dr C S Thorat, Principal expressed happiness over this invention. He told ‘The Hitavada’, “When there is a talk of environment going on I encourage our students and faculty to contribute to the conservation of mother nature. I think this invention is a part of our institute’s policy.” Service Training Manager L P Kirpane of Mahindra (MILE) Nagpur appreciated the efforts of the students. Head of the Department Dr G K Awari says this invention can be further explored in future for greater utility in the field of waste management.
