‘Save Merit Save India’ Assn stages demonstration in GMCH

Expressing displeasure over the decision of Maharashtra Government that has occupied 79% seats for the students of various reserved category, ‘Save Merit Save India’ Association staged demonstration in the premises of Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) on Monday. Students and parents related to various associations stood in front of office of Dean of GMCH and raised slogans. The demonstrators alleged the draconian reservation policy that has brought the students from open category in trouble as less chances would remain for them to get admissions in various courses.
 
Nearly 100 activists across all professions and groups belonging to varied open category of various religions gathered. Dr R G Chandak informed, “Somebody of us tried to meet Governor of Maharashtra in Mumbai but he failed to get appointment. Now, we will be holding agitation at Samvidhan square on Tuesday at 4 pm. We have come to conclusion that approaching Court will be the better option and we are preparing ourselves to knock the door of High Court.”
 
Issues of reservations, privileges and protections accorded to reserved categories and dilution of services in various sectors due to weakening merit was emphasized. Unfortunately, time has come to seek quota for open category, said members. Everybody appealed for immediate need to mobilize support for Open category belonging to various caste groups. Nearly 35% of the total population is unreserved and will suffer due to 78% reservations and the children of this 35% population will not get equality in admission to education or even jobs despite having merit, pointed out a member. Everybody lamented the action of Government of Maharashtra (GOM) about imposition of reservation up to 78%, despite Supreme Court judgment of 50% maximum limit.
 
A large number of open category castes’ association representatives like Akhil Bhartiya Brahmin Mahasangh, North Indian Brahmin Samaj, Maheshwari Samaj, Agrawal Samaj, Punjabi Samaj, Arya Vaish Samaj, Muslim Association, South Indian Society, Kerala Catholic Association, Nair Service Society, Mar Thoma Church, Kerala Ambalavasi Sabha, Bengali Association, Jain Samaj and Sindhi Panchayat also expressed their concerns and unanimously resolved to unitedly fight against the increasing reservations affecting provision of equal opportunity to thrive in our country. Students and their parents with all professionals, industrialists, businessmen and other concerned spread across all religions have joined the agitation. This all religion open category caste groups represent more than 35% of population.
