   Date :26-May-2019

Narendra Modi’s aura is so large that it has transcended not only the geographical boundaries but even the political, religious and ideological boundaries earmarked in the minds of the people for over a period of time. The Indians world over despite the political differences eulogises Modi for his ability to consolidate the Indian mind on the issue of national security and nationalism. The Hitavada Resident Editor of Raipur Edition, E V Murli describes how Modi won the hearts of people.

MAY 23, 2019, people were glued on to their television sets just to confirm whether the exit poll predictions were proving realistic. Once the results started pouring in and the lead figures of NDA were on the screens, many people convincingly switched off their television sets as they were sure that NDA is to retain power and Narendra Damodardas Modi will be the Prime Minister of the country yet again. It was like a celebration all around and the television anchors and senior journalists participating in the debates had to concede about the repeat of the Modi magic even in the general elections 2019 and this time the magic was pure and enticing. Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India is no common man but Narendra Damodardas Modi, the BJP loyalist and humble party worker is a man of the ‘aam admi’. Even at the pinnacle of his success, he never allowed the triumph to overpower his ethos and indolence to conquer him.

He is a man of ‘Karma’ and his conviction sparks from his words and deeds. His aura is so large that it has transcended not only the geographical boundaries but even the political, religious and ideological boundaries earmarked in the minds of the people for over a period of time. The Indians world over despite the political differences eulogises Modi for his ability to consolidate the Indian mind on the issue of national security and nationalism. As Prime Minister of the country, he was as secular as any other leader that India has seen in the recent past. Coming from the land of Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Vallbhai Patel, Narendra Modi showed up his sensibilities, moral courage, political concord and wisdom identical to these great leaders and this had spaced him out in the 2019 elections and people gave him and his party an overwhelming mandate.

Any political party remaining in power usually tends to face an anti-incumbency, but here there was not even a talk of anti-incumbency, it was all for Modi and against Modi but people voted for Modi. The margin by which the BJP candidates won clearly showed that the magic of Modi was in place. In the Hindi heartland, the Modi magic was at its best. In West Bengal, even the TMC could not withstand this magic. The Modi magic had not only swept through the Hindi heartland and Gujarat, but also created a ripple in West Bengal, Odisha, Maharashtra and Karnataka. Only Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh appeared untouched. Even in Telangana, the BJP sprung surprise by winning four seats fighting against the potent Telangana Rashtra Samiti that won 9 seats out of 17 in the State.

BJP has even bettered its performance this time as its vote share in several States, including Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan grew by leap and bounds. But South where there are 130 seats, BJP-led NDA won only 30 seats. However, Karnataka was an exception where the party managed to win 25 of the 28 Lok Sabha seats. Karnataka for BJP has lot of political significance as it planned to emerge in South and the gateway is Karnataka. Interestingly, the BJP is also making inroads in Kerala where they have a representation in the Assembly and in some of the local bodies.

The vote share of BJP has also seen a rise and perhaps the Amit Shah-Modi team has a strategy for Kerala as they have indicated. In the Hindi heartland of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, the BJP came up with a scintillating performance. Particularly in Chhattisgarh where the party was reduced to a mere 15 numbers in the Assembly after being in power for 15 years. But within five months after this drubbing, the BJP riding on the Modi wave re-emerged like a phoenix to win nine out of eleven seats in the State. In Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan too, the performance of BJP was exceptionally good and beyond expectations as these States also have Congress Governments that took over just five months back. The sudden change in the mentality of the voters was not gauged properly by the existing political leadership in these States and got succumbed under the magic of Modi wave.

Rajasthan was worst with no seats for the Congress party. The Congress now needs to exercise a self evaluation as to what went wrong. Whether the policies of the Government, the attitude of the Ministers in these States, the Congress manifesto or the lack of aura of its leaders affected this humiliating defeat? Of course the defeat of Congress is no small mean, it shows lack of people’s faith in the Congress and its leadership. The Congress party too will have to look into it as there is no dearth of good leadership in the party and the Congress leadership will have to somehow get the sycophants do away with it -- as they are the ones who have made a mess of this national party. The aura comes from self emancipation and conviction and this is a facet not easily available, but comes after years of toiling and conviction. NDA is credited with this aura under its leader Modi, who has accomplished it by his selfless attitude, gravity of thoughts and earnestness for service to humanity.

But, with this huge mandate also comes more responsibility. The people have reposed their faith in Modi and the NDA. Not just the Prime Minister but all Ministers of his Cabinet and Members of Parliament will have to work as a team to fulfill the aspirations of people while respecting the Opposition and accepting their demands and corroborating their valuable suggestions. Even the Opposition will have to be part of the team Modi for the greater interest of the nation and the people. This will be in true spirit of democracy and parliamentary ethics. India is all set to march towards a new beginning and under Narendra Modi, the nation will continue its march ahead and the mandate is for a stronger and prosperous nation.
