GH Raisoni University, School of Agriculture Sciences, organised day-long workshop on ‘Recent techniques for bamboo production’. The programme was inaugurated by Rajshekhar Patil, Progressive Bamboo Producer, Professor Sudhir Meshram, and Vice Chancellor GH Raisoni University. There were agriculture faculties, farmers from various villages on Thursday. During the bamboo workshop Rajshekhar Patil displayed ‘hoe’, the wonder grass called bamboo changed his destiny. “A decade ago, money lenders used to be at my doorsteps, now I get queries from income tax sleuth and I have to explain how the bamboo brought me wealth,” said Patil.

“My family has 54 acres which is hardly fertile. There is no water or electricity. My father suffered from paralysis with constant stress while trying to make a living after toiling 16 hours a day in the field. Then the bamboo magic happened. I got almost 40,000 bamboo saplings for free from a nearby government nursery where they had no takers. I thought I would plant them at the periphery of my land to keep off stray animal and to provide protection to one lakh fruit trees,” added VC Patil.

He said that in the next five years while horticulture often failed because of drought and difficult conditions, the bamboo thrived and he had 10 lakh bamboo poles ready. Students, farmers and growers from adjoining areas join in the workshop and get acquainted with recent trends in bamboo cultivation. Professor Shriram Joshi, Registrar, proposed the vote of thanks. Faculties and students were present in large number for the auspicious function.
