After two decades, the results of class XII board examination of CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) were declared first time in the first week of May and students of Chhattisgarh recorded a pass percentage of 92.1%- the highest among the three states (Chhattisgarh, Odisha and West Bengal) of CBSE Bhubaneswar region. The results of the All India Senior School Certificate Examination (AISSCE) held in March-April of this year, declared on Friday noon. Over 14,820 students from 352 affiliated CBSE schools of the state took the examination and there was a slight improvement in pass percentage of exam in state.

The pass percentage of class XII-AISSCE exam across Chhattisgarh last year was 89.9%. As in previous years, girls have outperformed boys in AISSCE of CBSE in the state, with passing percentage of girls reported at 94.2% while passing percentage of boys in the state was reported 90.6%. Unlike previous years, this time, Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) of the state gave better results in class XII than residential school Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs) in the state.

The passing percentage of class XII examination in KVs of the state was 95.3% while of JNVs in the state was reported at 94.8%. In last three years, JNVs of the state reported maximum pass percentage in class XII board examinations of CBSE. On the other hand, private unaided schools of CBSE in the state reported 91.2% of pass percentage while government and government aided schools reported pass percentage of 82.3%. School principals and teachers said that it was difficult to access the website of CBSE as a result of the heavy congestion and power failures, which made the process of getting the school results awkward. As CBSE suddenly declared the results of class XII without any prior information, it came as a surprise as many parents as well as students were unaware and got information about the results after 1 pm.

“Around 12.40 pm, my office colleague called me and informed me about the declaration of results by CBSE at 12 noon,’’ said Saheli Verma, assistant manager in cooperative bank. Living up to the reputation the students from Steel City Bhilai proved their mettle. Most of the schools have surpassed their own previous records while the toppers percentage this year has also improved as compared to previous year. This year, the district topper secured 98.6 percentage marks as compared to last year which was 98.4 percent and he is also so far the state topper. M Thomas Jacob of Delhi Public School, Bhilai topped the district with 98.6 percentage marks.

He is probably the zone and state topper as the highest percentage in the Bhuwaneshwar Zone is 98.6. M Thomas Jacob with PCM (Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics) scored 493 marks out of 500 marks. He is also 2nd topper of JEE Main in state and at present he is preparing for JEE Advanced. Snigdha Sarkar from Senior Secondary School Sector-10 Bhilai with 96.6 percent is second while Rohit Sao from Shakuntala Vidyalaya is in third position with 96.4 percent as per the reports currently available. The total pass percentage for the country is 83.4%. The region with the highest pass percentage is Thiruvananthapuram at 98.2%, followed by Chennai at 92.93% and Delhi at 91.87%. The board had conducted the Secondary Examination (Class 10) and Higher Secondary Examination (Class 12) for the academic session 2018-19 in February-March 2019. Around 13 lakh students appeared for the Class 12 examination conducted by the CBSE.

The CBSE does not award individual ranks, many curious parents, students and teachers were eager to know how other children and schools fared. According to many schools, students belonging to commerce stream fared better than science groups (mathematics as well as biology). In almost all schools, pass percentage and first division holders were reported more in commerce stream than science stream. Many schools also pointed out that the less than expected marks in English have reduced the overall percentage. Sofia Khan, principal and English Lecturer stated that it could be because literature is more textual and correction is more subjective in languages. But still many students also succeeded to score over 90 marks in English. Students who wish to apply for verification of marks must apply within 21 days from the date of declaration of results. “Unless there is a variation of 10 marks, I would not recommend my students to go for recounting. The percentage error is very less as the paper goes through six to seven stages,” asserted Prashant Kumar, Principal of a leading CBSE school in state.
