Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University (RTMNU) has probably for the first time taken initiative for proper management of the water available with it. With so much water scarcity, and projected rise in demand with new administrative building coming up, the University has decided to do comprehensive planning so that it would not face any water crisis. In its initiative, it will be taking help of Sarvodaya Seva Foundation Trust, run by noted singer Anuradha Paudwal.

Apart from the University’s old building at Maharajbag square, it has its campuses at Amravati road, in the premises of Laxminarayan Institute of Technology, near Law College square. While the premises near Law College square and at old building do not face any problem on water front, water crisis is faced at its LIT premises, in Mahatma Jyotiba Phule campus and in new administrative building situated near campus which will become functional from July this year.

Come summer and the University faces water problem and everytime it has to beg for water to Nagpur Municipal Corporation. While contemplating to find solution to water crisis, the administration has come up to meet the demand by drawing water from an untapped large well behind valuation centre at Examination Department in LIT premises. “I don’t want to cast an aspersion on earlier regime, but nobody every realised that we have more than enough water with us.

The management of water was not done in a proper way. When we were giving a thought to end water crisis, we came to know about the big well in our own premises. Now, we have decided to use that water for the whole LIT premises which will not have any problem for years to come. In addition to it we will be digging a borewell where the rain water can be collected. It will be an additional source along with the water we have in our well,” informed Dr S P Kane, Vice-Chancellor, RTMNU. As promised by Pate builders, the new administrative building of the University will be ready for possession by July. Since almost all departments would be shifted there, they too need adequate water. The building has two underground tanks of one lakh liter water capacity each.

The University has already made an arrangement for rain water harvesting. Some small borewells will be created behind the building so that groundwater level would get increased through rain water harvesting. “Apart from it, we will be taking water from Ambazari lake to be pulled by installing two machines of 50 horsepower each. The water comes through these machines would be released in the water tank near Mahatma Jyotiba Phule campus.

The whole water would cater to the needs of all departments of campus,” elaboarated Dr Kane while talking to ‘The Hitavada’. Sarvodaya Seva Foundation Trust that has been working in water management sector had approached the University and volunteered to provide its service and expertise. The University agreed to the proposal of the Foundation. A team of the Foundation visited LIT premises, campus and the area near new administrative building to review the situation, recently. According to Dr Kane, the actual work is likely to start within a month.
