Khaperkheda Thermal Power Station of Maharashtra State Power Generation Corporation Limited (Mahagenco) has received the ‘Best Zero Discharge Plant Award’ in 500 or less Megawatt Category. Mission Energy Foundation had organised Water Optimization Competition in various categories, following which the awards were declared at a conference held at Vivanta by Taj, Dwarka. A majority of power plants from all over India including National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) and private power plants participated in the competition. The competition was very stiff looking into the level of optimization achieved by many plants, especially NTPC’s Thermal Power Plants.

However, the expeditious and significant efforts taken to utilise maximum water from Waregaon ash-bund, significant improvement in Waregaon recovery, and bringing down trade effluents for 30 years old plant won the award for Khaperkheda thermal power station.

The entire water data was collected directly from Central Electricity Authority and the individual competing plants were not entertained at all in any form for data collection, states a press release. Rajesh Patil, Chief Engineer, Khaperkheda thermal power station, recognised the importance of Mahagenco top management in pursuing water conservation efforts taken at Khaperkheda.

He thanked all top officials and Chandrant Thotwe, Director (Operations), for overwhelming support extended from time to time in water optimisation. He also credited the rigorous and timely efforts taken by all employees, sectional heads and middle management of Khaperkheda thermal power station to achieve water optimisation at Khaperkheda with short term and long term planning.
