Super Specialty Hospital (SSH) of Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) has become first in Maharashtra among Government hospitals to perform 50 kidney transplants. The first kidney transplant was conducted on February 9, 2016 since then GMCH never looked back. Addressing mediapersons on Saturday, Dr Sajal Mitra, Dean of GMCH said, “It is a collective efforts of our team at Super Specialty Hospital and support from Department of Medical Education.

The kind of enthusiasm and approach of volunteering by the team could make us achieve this feat. The 50th kidney transplant was performed two days ago on Amit Wahane, a young boy of 26 years. “He came to us in November, 2018 with the proble of kidney failure, then he was in third stage. We conducted several tests on him and came to conclusion nothing could be done. We kept him on dialysis for some time but that was only measures of relief.

The only option remained with us is of kidney transplant. We checked with his close relatives and found, kidney of her mother could be donated. Accordingly, we convinced them and mother agreed to do the honour,” informed Dr Charulata Bawankule, Head, Department of Nephrology, SSH. Team of doctors performed kidney transplant successfully. Dr Sanjay Kolte, noted Urologist along with Dr Sameer Chaube, well-known Nephrologist said, “Normally donor takes 4 to 5 days to recover while it takes at least three months for recipient to recover.

Till then certain precautions are need to be taken by both.” Dr Charulata Bawankule stated, “In the past for some time we lack in staff as far as post operative rehabilitation is concerned. Now, we have well trained full-fledged staff rendering services after transplant. Time to time donor and recipients have to do check up, get their Kidney Function Test done periodically. Of course these measures are to be taken by healthy individuals too otherwise. These are only precautionary measures.” Dr Chaube said, “The rate of recovery is 98% regarding live kidney transplant which is good as compared to cadaveric which is 72%.” Out of the 50 transplants 5 are cadaveric while 45 are live with 39 were covered under Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jivandayi Aarogya Yojna. Rest prefered SSH over private ones.

Can GMCH become second Transplant Centre in India? Several people are not aware of concept of Transplant Centre. Dr Sanjay Kolte, noted Urologist explained, “Transplant Centre is that where people are trained to perform all kinds of transplant. There is no bifurcation of specialities. Those perform kidney transplant can do it in case of heart, liver, lungs too. Concept has not taken roots in India yet.” Dr Sameer Chaube informed, “Only one such centre is there in the whole country situated at Ahmedabad. It was set up by Dr H L Trivedi in Civil Hospital supported by Government and a Trust.” Dr Mitra said, “As far as setting up Transplant Centre in GMCH we need to have first facility to do liver and heart transplant then we can thought of such Transplant Centre.

Dr Lahane expresses happiness Padma Shri Dr Tatyarao Lahane, Director of Medical Education and Research who himself had undergone kidney transplant expressed happiness over the feat of GMCH. The transplant that was performed on Dr Lahane long back has similarity with the 50th transplant taken place at SSH. In both cases mother is donor and son is recipient.
