Private polytechnics are facing vacancy issue more than the Govt ones

With Maharashtra Government has given priority to its own polytechnics as far as problem of vacancy is concerned, no efforts are being taken by the private owners. Most of the institutes are on the verge of closure. While Maharashtra is facing the issue of vacancy in almost all the technical institutions, presently Government has given priority to reduce it in polytechnics. If one has a look at the statistics of intake and vacancy of 2018-2019, in polytechnics, private institutions are facing the problem more than the Government ones. Government polytechnics have about 21,000 seats and the vacant seats are around 5,000. In percent the vacancy comes around 23%.

In Nagpur region there are six Government polytechnics with 2,788 intake, one is Government-aided with intake of 126 while there are 52 polytechnics run by private organisations with the intake of 14,707. Out of total 2,788 seats in Government, 1,536 are filled, the percentage of which comes around 55. In private less that 20% seats are filled. 38 colleges in Maharashtra have close down engineering courses because of poor enrollment.

There were 1.65 lakh engineering seats in 365 colleges and 70,000 seats in 450 polytechnic institutes in Maharashtra last year. Most of the colleges have close down, the reason according to Dr Abhay Wagh, Director, Technical Education (DTE), must be the huge gap between demand and supply in this field in the recent years. If one has a look at the statistics of polytechnics in Nagpur region it is found that students prefer Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Metallurgy, Travel and Tourism, Textiles over other branches. While Nagpur and Gondia performed well. Nagpur has intake of 830 seats and 753 seats are filled while in Gondia polytechnic has 360 seats and 297 are filled.
