One of the two elephants strayed from Chhattisgarh side to Gadchiroli district tossed a forest guard with its trunk and seriously injured in Kochinara/ Satputi jungle in Korchi tehsil on Tuesday. The elephants were found moving in Murumgaon two days ago and then they shifted to Kochinara/ Satputi jungle in Bedgaon Forest Range falling in Wadsa Forest Division. Upon getting information about the elephants, the Range Forest Officer, Bedgaon, and his staff reached the spot to search the elephants. Meanwhile, the news of sighting elephants in the area spread like jungle fire and a crowd of villagers from nearby places gathered at the spot.

The villagers were anxious to see the elephants for the first time. The mob and scorching heat probably disturbed the jumbos to go berserk. At the stage, one Dnyaneshwar Chilamwar, Forest Guard, saw one elephant in the chaotic situation but soon other elephant chased Dnyaneshwar, held him in the trunk and tossed him up in the air. Dnyaneshwar received grievous injuries on face and waist and also got his leg fractured after falling on the ground. Rapid Rescue Team is leaving on Wednesday morning to the spot for monitoring, informed reliable sources.

When contacted, Niranjan Vivarekar, Deputy Conservator of Forest, Wadsa, told ‘The Hitavada’ that forestmen admitted Dnyaneshwar first to the nearby Primary Health Centre and then to a private hospital in Brahmapuri for treatment. His condition is improving, he added. Vivarekar also rushed to the spot in the after noon to monitor the situation. He said the elephants were seen in the morning in Kochinara/ Satputi jungle while mob of villagers gathered there during noon time.

The elephants probably got disturbed because of crowd and rising temperature that led to the incident. Forest officers and staff would go to the spot on Wednesday morning to find out locations of the jumbos and decide what further steps they should take. Meanwhile, Vivarekar contacted Nitin Kakodkar, Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (Wildlife), Nagpur, and gave details about the incident. Kakodkar instructed to take necessary steps to deal with the delicate situation. The forestmen cautioned the villagers from Kochinara, Dawandi and other nearby villages to avoid going to jungle and take proper precautions. Vivarekar hoped that the elephants would move elsehwere adding that foresters would remain vigilant. However, forestmen are continuously monitoring the situation, he added.
