Medical PG admissions: High Court to hear petition challenging ordinance today

The Nagpur bench of Bombay High Court will hear the petition, challenging the ordinance issued by Maharashtra Government that had implemented the Maratha reservation by retrospective effect will be held on Thursday. The Supreme Court had made it clear that no Maratha reservation would be applied in Post Graduate (PG) Medical admissions from this year.
 
 
After the judgment by the apex court, the Government had issued the ordinance on quota of 16% for Socially and Economically Backward Class (SEBC). Some students challenged the order and Nagpur bench of Bombay High Court canceled the admissions by not allowing SEBC reservation to be implemented. In the mean time students of Maratha community started agitation. Maharashtra Government convened a special meeting of Cabinet and issued the ordinance.It was challenged by Dr Pranjali Charde and others, which will be heard on Thursday. Adv Subodh Dharmadhikari, Adv Ashwin Deshpande appeared for petitioners.
EWS seats to be filled on the basis of NEET merit
 
Along with the Maratha reservation, the Government had implemented reservation for the students belong to Economically Weaker Section (EWS). While conducting admission process both the sections were taken into account. But the Supreme Court vide the order dated May 30, had canceled he EWS reservation from medical admissions. The apex court asked State Government to conduct admissions newly.
 
 
The Supreme Court had also made it clear that the seats should be filled from the general category. Instead, State Government had started filling those seats from open category. This move of Government was challenged in the Supreme Court. The Court directed State Government to admit students from general category as per the NEET merit in place of EWS students, whose reservation was canceled by Court.
