DTE may extend date of submission of applications

Despite all efforts taken by Directorate of Technical Education (DTE), Joint Directors, Principals, Heads of the Department the response to the admissions of Post SSC Diploma courses in Maharashtra seems to be poor. Two days remained for the confirmation to be submitted by students and only 5,318 candidates did it in Maharashtra. There are around 1.20 lakh seats of Diploma courses in Government as well as private polytechnics.

DTE had fixed the schedule for polytechnic admissions that said on-line registration for admission, document verification and confirmation of application forms are to be done by June 18, 2019. As per the latest position available with ‘The Hitavada’ gives a gloomy picture. A total of 34,526 candidates got registered themselves out of them 17,597 students filed the applications completely. Out of these 17,597 candidates, 5,318 students posted confirmation which means 12,279 did not confirm which is a huge number. There are two days more to go and if maximum number submit their confirmations by June 18, it is unlikely to exceed 10,000 number. It means that at this juncture around 1.10 lakh seats may remain vacant. This is rough estimate obviously. Senior officials on condition of anonymity argue, since there is a big chunk of students who has applied for revaluation, many students did not get the marksheet and Leaving Certificate, the documents important in the admission process of any course, so the visibility of students approaching Diploma courses is less

According to these officials, DTE may extend the date further for the convenience of students. Polytechnic colleges in Maharashtra are facing the problem of seat vacancy. Showing deep concern over the dwindling number of admissions to the diploma courses run at Government Polytechnics in Maharashtra, the Director of Technical Education (DTE) Dr Abhay Wagh had initiated a workshop to guide the Government Polytechnics to take certain measures. According to one measure, faculty of Government polytechnics had to visit the institutions to get the admissions for post-SSC Diploma courses. Sources disclosed that DTE had collected a data of phone numbers of students appeared in Class X examinations.

Data was provided to faculty of Government polytechnics on the basis of which they made calls to the students and requested them to take admissions. Going ahead DTE had deliberately announced the admission schedule much earlier, that too did not help in giving results. Till four years ago Polytechnics saw a quite rush of students. But in last four years the number has gone down, the reason of which unknown to everybody. Last year such was the picture that private polytechnic institutes invited students for the admissions and negotiated fees also. Picture of Last year If one has a look at the statistics of intake and vacancy of 2018-2019, in polytechnics, private institutions are facing the problem more than the Government ones.

Government polytechnics have about 21,000 seats and the vacant seats are around 5,000. In percent the vacancy comes around 23%. In Nagpur region there are six Government polytechnics with 2,788 intake, one is Government-aided with intake of 126 while there are 52 polytechnics run by private organisations with the intake of 14,707. Out of total 2,788 seats in Government, 1,536 are filled, the percentage of which comes around 55. In private less that 20% seats are filled. If one has a look at the statistics of polytechnics in Nagpur region it is found that students prefer Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Metallurgy, Travel and Tourism, Textiles over other branches. Only Nagpur and Gondia performed well. Nagpur has intake of 830 seats and 753 seats are filled while in Gondia polytechnic has 360 seats and 297 are filled. Gadchiroli showed poor performance as its only 48 seats are filled out of 300.
