The doctors’ strike in various hospitals paralysed health facilities and left patients at the mercy of God on Monday. Patients were seen running from pillar to post to get treatment but to no avail. Even there are reports that doctors have not attended patients operated day before yesterday and they lived without care of doctors. Family members of patients were seen venting out their frustration over the strike of doctors. ‘The Hitavada’ talked to some patients and doctors at Hamidia Hospital and here are their excerpts.

Zainab said that, “My husband is a TB patient and he needs to be treated as soon as possible. When we went for check-up, the doctor denied to give any treatment and asked us to go to a TB hospital.Though, the doctor prescribed us some medicines for TB and HIV but due to the strike we didn’t get them. We are waiting for our medicines from last 4 hours.”

Leela Krishna said, “My grandson is admitted in this hospital from Wednesday. Doctors are not taking proper care of my grandson. We did not get even a place to stay. Moreover the doctors didn’t prescribe any medicines for my grandson. The hospital is being very careless towards the patients.”

Urmila a patient at the hospital says, “I am here at the hospital from the morning. After the check-up the doctor ordered for an operation. They didn’t even prescribe any medicines. The doctors asked us to wait till tomorrow as the doctors are unavailable due to the strike. There is no place for us to stay till tomorrow and we are really suffering in this unpredictable climate.”

 Radhika-
“My husband was operated yesterday night. It’s been around 12 hours after the operation and my husband is suffering from fever. Due to this strike the doctors are not paying any attention towards him. Doctors prescribed just two medicines and didn’t even show up for check-up. There are other patients like my husband who are not receiving proper attention from the doctors.” Doctor Navin says, “We started this strike from Saturday and it will continue till we get justice. This strike is just to demand protection and security for our community. We want the people to know that we always try to do our best because we owed to save lives. We never mean any harm to our patients.

The public should know that sometimes it is difficult to save every life. We know that the patients are facing inconvenience but we need to fight for our security. Patients are not ignored due to this strike, moreover serious or emergency cases are attended at the earliest” Doctor Dhruvi Gupta says, “What we as a doctor want is respect and a safe working place like any other individual. We need a place where we can work without hesitation or without any fear that we might die if we are unable to save the patient. Sometimes it becomes impossible to save a patient because we are not God, we cannot do the impossible things. Moreover using this incident to gain political power and making it a political issue is really unfair.” Doctor Vinati Khatiya says, “All we ask for is respect and proper consideration. We do whatever is best in our capacity to save our patients life. We don’t deserve fear and injuries in return. We just need protection for ourselves, we are not here to create chaos. Even during the strike the patients are provided with basic treatment and the serious patients are attended by the doctors as soon as possible”.
