To create awareness about traffic rules among college students, traffic police have decided to rate colleges in city on the basis of road discipline of its students. The police have decided to institute ‘Excellence Award for College whose students obey traffic rules’. Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Traffic Gajanan Rajmane informed The Hitavada that traffic police would constitute teams to visit colleges and undertook a survey to assess performance of each institution with rules. “We have set some points that would be decisive while giving ratings to the colleges,” he said.

“For example a committee of police officers and prominent personalities, during the visit to colleges would assess parking arrangements in place at that particular institution, how the area is segregated. If four wheelers are there, do these vehicles have black film, and do all the bikers coming to college wear helmets. Also the teams would also test students’ awareness about traffic rules and based on all these points for the rating would be decided,” he explained.

“Commissioner of Police Dr B K Upadhyay has also provided us guidance on how to go about the survey so that college administration too can play constructive role in it,” said DCP Rajmane further. “Traffic cops are gearing up for constitution of committee and we have deiced to rope in Regional Transport Office (RTO) and Rashtrasant Tukdoji Maharaj Nagpur University officials to be part of it,” DCP Rajmane informed. Colleges would be bifurcated in different groups for the award. For example, all the engineering colleges will be placed in one category while medical colleges would put in another category and so on. The city police will organise a special programme for distribution of the award and mention the reasons for choosing that college.

The police have set a goal to reach more than one lakh college students through the idea. The police would also organise special programme including power point presentation (PPT), videos and discussion with experts on traffic issues. During this drive, the cops would also choose one of the college students who was never challaned for any violation so far as brand ambassador.
