CONCERNED by the declining numbers of preventive action against criminals in the state, Director General of Police (DGP) Subodh Jaiswal has ordered all police stations to prepare list of top ten criminals in their area and initiate stern preventive action against them. Special Inspector General of Police (Special IGP) (Law and Order) Milind Bharambe issued the circular on behalf of DGP Jaiswal which criticised the police units for falling number of preventive action under Maharashtra Prevention of Dangerous Activities Act (MPDA) and Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA).

“It was observed that action against the criminal elements under MPDA and MCOCA was reduced in the state. This shows that stern action was not initiated against slumlords, bootleggers, drug offenders and organised criminals,” the circular stated and warned that the matter was of grave concern and could lead to dangerous law and order situation in the State.

The DGP directed all police units to prepare list of top ten accused in body offences in the area of each police station and initiate stern preventive action against the goons under MPDA and MCOCA. Special IGP Bharambe told The Hitavada that the directives were issued against the backdrop of upcoming Assembly elections. “Basic idea behind the circular was to motivate the staff to accelerate stern action against criminals to keep law and order situation under control,” he said.

CP raps Police Inspectors for lethargic approach: Furious over growing incidents of violent crimes, Commissioner of Police (CP) Dr B K Upadhyaya on Tuesday pulled up senior rank officials for their lethargic approach in policing and directed them to carry out proactive policing. He observed that the force had become more of a reactionary force during the last two months. The Police Commissioner gave his piece of mind to the city police force on Tuesday evening. That he chose the medium of wireless broadcast to give lashing to station in-charge speaks volume about seriousness of the situation. It means the city police chief wanted public at large to know that he was not sitting idle even as goons were on killing spree, targeting each other. That he chose not to wait till monthly crime meeting also indicates the graveness of the situation wherein the Police Commissioner feels the force needs to change its mindset and get control of the situation. He categorically named Police Inspector of Ajni and Kotwali Police Stations for their slumberous approach. It may be mentioned here that recent crimes reported at Ajni and Kotwali Police Stations were clear-cut sign of failure of police.
