Medical doc conserves water in Dagdi Park and at home too
   Date :19-Jun-2019

Holes are created in the compound wall of Dagdi Park so that rain water instead of flowing from the adjacent streets into drains, seeps through the holes in the wall inside the park thus increasing the water table. Due to repeated asphalting the level of the roads is at a higher level than the Dagdi Park.

Though the awareness about rain water harvesting or water conservation is lacking among people in general, some have been doing it for the last so many years. They can be termed as torch-bearers as far as water conservation is considered. How some small initiatives can help in saving water or increasing the water level is evident from the idea that was implemented in Ramdaspeth Dagdi park by a renowned medical doctor residing in Ramdaspeth. What did she earned out of that small voluntary step? Personally nothing, but to the society, it could give huge.

The above photographs are of 5th floor private terrace of Penthouse in Padamganga owned by Dr Shubhangi Deshmane situated in Ramdaspeth, opposite Dagdi Park. Water from both terraces and also from other terraces and balconies of all flats in the Padamganga Society is diverted into a common well after filtration. This water is used for all purposes except for drinking purpose.

All over Nagpur we have been facing the road leveling problems. At many places because of concretisation, road level has gone up, above the house level. Same thing happened at Dagdi park in Ramdaspeth. During raining the water used flow towards Panchsheel square, Janata square where it gets logged and ultimately remained unused. Dr Shubhangi Deshmane, a well-known gynaecologist who stays in Padmaganga apartment near Dagdi park observed this wastage of water and thought that something should be done. Meanwhile civic authorities started renovating walls around Dagdi park and Dr Deshmane requested them to drill holes through the walls.

As it is their wont the authorities did not do it. After the construction of wall, Dr Deshmane again insisted the same with Garden Superintendent who finally did it. Holes were drilled on three sides of walls. Now the rain water does not flow towards Panchsheel Square or Janata Square. It goes through the holes and enters into the well in garden. “Result of that idea worked well and this year the water level of well in Dagdi park did not go down when Nagpur faced so much water scarcity,” informed Dr Deshmane. Dr Deshmane did the same thing in her apartment too and sensitised the others in the building. “We and our neighbour have terraces and others have balconies.

We used to clean the terraces or balconies, the water flowed down and got wasted. I realised it and we all decided to divert the water to the well through filter. Now we get clean water which we can use for bath, brushing etc. This has not only helped us in conserving the water but our electricity and water bills too got reduced drastically,” pointed out Dr Deshmane.
