8 of 10 Zone chiefs elected unopposed

Congress corporator Gargi Chopra becomes Chairperson of Mangalwari Zone with the support of BJP 
 
Of a total 10 Zone Chairpersons, eight were elected unopposed and polling was held to elect Chairpersons for Ashi Nagar and Mangalwari zones. In Laxmi Nagar and Gandhibagh zones, the chiefs were re-elected. The zone-wise Chairpersons elected on Saturday in the process conducted in Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) include Laxmi Nagar -- Prakash Bhoyar, Dharampeth -- Amar Bagde, Hanuman Nagar -- Madhuri Thakre, Dhantoli -- Lata Kadgaye, Nehru Nagar -- Samita Chakole, Gandhibagh -- Vandana Yangatwar, Satranjipura -- Abhiruchi Rajgire, Lakadganj -- Rajkumar Sahu, Ashi Nagar -- Viranka Bhivgade, and Mangalwari -- Gargi Chopra. In Mangalwari Zone, Congress corporator Gargi Chopra and Narendra Walde were in the contest. Chopra polled nine votes while Walde polled only three. Chopra got elected as Chairperson of Mangalwari Zone with the support of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). This irked Congress corporators.
 
Praful Gudadhe, senior Congress corporator, said that they would lodge a complaint against Chopra with the party seniors. Ashi Nagar Zone witnessed a keen contest. Bhagyashree Kantode, Neha Nikose, Sandeep Sahare, and Viranka Bhivgade were in the contest. Naseem Bano Ibrahim Khan proposed the name of Kantode while Gopichand Kumre seconded it. Dinesh Yadav proposed name of Nikose and Parasram Manwatkar seconded it. Sahare’s name was proposed by Manoj Sangole and Bhavana Lonare backed it. Mohd Ibrahim Taufiq Ahmad proposed the name of Bhivgade and Mangala Lanjewar seconded it. At the eleventh hour, Kantode and Sahare backed out of contest. Kantode, Kumre, and Naseem Bano abstained from voting.
 
This resulted in straight fight between Nikose and Bhivgade. Bhivgade polled seven votes and got elected while Nikose polled six votes. Prakash Bhoyar retained his position as Chairman of Laxmi Nagar Zone. Nanda Jichkar, Mayor, proposed Bhoyar’s name while Sandip Joshi, Ruling Party Leader, seconded it. In Gandhibagh Zone, Vandana Yangatwar was re-elected as Chairperson. Pravin Datke, former Mayor, proposed her name and Sarala Nayak seconded the proposal. Ashwin Mudgal, District Collector, was the Presiding Officer for the election process.
 
Ravindra Thakre, Additional Municipal Commissioner; Harish Dubey, NMC Secretary; Raju Bhivgade, Mahesh Moroney, Smita Kale, Prakash Warade, Harish Raut, and Ganesh Rathod, all Assistant Commissioners, assisted Mudgal in conducting the process smoothly. After completion of the process Mudgal, Thakre, Dubey welcomed the newly elected Zone Chairpersons with Tulsi plant and congratulated them. Later, the Mayor also feted newly elected Zone Chairpersons. Pradeep Pohane, Chairman of Standing Committee; Varsha Thakre, Deputy Leader of Ruling Party; senior corporator Sunil Agrawal and Virendra Singh, also were present on the occasion.
