For the first time, tiger re-introduction plan gets success in a short span of time

After giving birth to three cubs at Nauradehi Wildlife Sanctuary, tigress Radha has finally been captured in camera trap for the first time. In pictures, the tigress is looking healthy. Forest officials said that the tigress was out for hunting after leaving the cubs in den. Meanwhile, her picture was recorded in hidden cameras. Left over carcass of animals after being prey of tigers is continuously spotting in the area which proved that tigress is coming out of the den regularly. The tigress has given birth to the cubs about one and half months back. As the cubs are quite small, she is not leaving them alone. Forest Department is also monitoring the tigress and cubs through camera trap. Special team has been deployed for patrolling in the jungle and to keep an eye for safety of the tigers.

Tigress Radha was brought to Nauradehi from Kanha National Park in May 2018. After a few days male tiger Kishan was also brought to the area from Bandhavgarh. Both felines were left in the open jungle and on May 9, 2019, it was reported that the tigress has given birth to three cubs. It was for the first time when tigress gave birth to cubs at Nauradehi jungle. Dr Ankur Awadhiya, District Forest Officer (DFO), Nauradehi, said that tigress Radha is still inside the den with her cubs. A male tiger has been also sighted around the den. Tigress will take one more month to take out the cubs from den. The area where tigress, cubs and male tiger is active, public interference is completely banned and field officials are keeping an eye from distance.

Night vision cameras are placed in the area so that animals do not get disturbed with flash lights. The young pair of Kishan and Radha was being sighted in the wildlife sanctuary together since after the relocation project introduced by the Forest Department in the year 2018. Earlier, officials were suspecting that there might be a territorial fight or clash between the two big cats as they were roaming in the same area but they took a sigh of relief when the tigers started living together in particular periphery. The two felines were set free in the area under tiger introduction plan in August 2018. Tigress Radha is about three and half years old while male tiger Kishan is five years old. Both feline have been radio collared for safety purpose. MP Wildlife and Forest Department has launched the tiger reintroduction plan at state largest wildlife sanctuary Nauradehi on April 18, 2018.

The project is inspired with successful tiger reintroduction plan of Panna Tiger Reserve. Earlier, there was no tiger at Nauradehi. Officials said that after translocation of a few tigers from these areas to Nauradehi, territorial fight and man-animal conflict cases will be declined. The project is being co-ordinated by all forest reserve officials. To make this campaign successful a team of trained staff has been deployed from Panna Tiger Reserve and group of elephants from Satpura Tiger Reserve. Nauradehi Wildlife Sanctuary is covering about 1197 square km of area and it is the largest wildlife sanctuary of Madhya Pradesh. The sanctuary located in the centre of state covering parts of Sagar, Damoh, Narsinghpur and Raisen districts.

It is about 90 km from Jabalpur and about 56 km from Sagar. Nauradehi Wildlife Sanctuary is known as natural residence of wolf. Once population of wolf in the sanctuary was dense but gradually wolf extinct from the jungle. After a gap of long years, cameras placed in the Nauradehi jungle recorded wolf and their cubs. Hence, it is being supposed that population of wolf in the area is increasing back. Habitat of Nauradehi is very supporting for the wolf.
