Chhattisgarh has expressed discontentment over the allotment of medical seats to its medical colleges by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MHFW), Government of India. According to a notification issued by MHFW increasing number of MBBS seats by 10 per cent under EWS Quota for the academic year 2019-20, Chhattisgarh would get 120 seats under the Quota.

The Medical Council of India (MCI) Board of Governors has increased the quota by 10 per cent for medical colleges across the nation for the year 2019-20. Five Medical Colleges of Chhattisgarh CIMS Bilaspur, Government Medical College Rajnandgaon, Baliram Kashyap Memorial NMDC Government Medical College Jagdalpur, Lakhiram Agrawal Memorial Government Medical College Raigarh and Jawahar Lal Nehru Memorial Medical College Raipur will get 30, 25, 25, 25 and 30 seats respectively under the quota. Meanwhile this did not go down well with the Chhattisgarh which demanded more seats under the quota. Talking to The Hitavada, Dr S L Adile, Director, Directorate of Medical Education (DME), said, “We had demanded at least 50 seats for each our colleges keeping in mind the demand of doctors in the state. But the MCI allotted this much (120) seats to the state on the ground shortage of faculty the medical colleges facing in Chhattisgarh.”

The government had asked the MCI to enhance MBBS seats in lieu of 10 per cent reservation for the poor in government colleges of Chhattisgarh from this academic session, said Dr Adile. Aspirants from the EWS category could now apply for the reserved seats. The MBBS seats would be enhanced from this session. It is to be mentioned, the MCI had said the increase in the seats would not entail any corresponding increase in infrastructure or faculty right now. It further said in order to implement the 10 per cent EWS quota, the increase in the seats would be 25 per cent of the current intake to ensure that the number of general category seats were not affected. The NEET results were declared on June 5 and counselling is expected to be held last week of this month.
