The first day in the school always remains memorable, especially for the students who enjoy it like any celebration. Keeping academic pressure away from students, the first day was celebrated as ‘Praveshotsav’ on Monday with many events in different schools so that the students may initiate new chapter of their life with fresh and joyful mood. Under ‘School Chalein Abhiyan’, the first day of the school was celebrated in unique way in the Government schools in the district. Many schools organised cultural activities, keeping the students’ interest in view and congratulated them for getting promoted for upper classes. They also honoured students scoring outstanding marks in their examinations.

In other schools, the students were offered warm welcome on their first day in school by applying tilak on their foreheads by the teachers. The authorities in different schools distributed text-books and bicycles among the students who became quite happy after receiving the same. Praveshotsava programme was organised in all the 26 primary and 13 middle schools coming under the periphery of Jan Shiksha Kendra Government Girls’ Higher Secondary School, Barela. The students were offered red carpet welcome in their schools in presence of members of school management committee, parents and public representatives. The teachers applied tilak on the forehead of students and offered them sweets. The students also received free text-books distributed by the school authorities.

Later on, the students participated in Bal Sabha, while the members attended the meeting of school management committee. Meanwhile, there was a completely different view outside the private schools, where the parents of pre-nursery students enthusiastically carried their wards to the schools. Few students happily entered the campus with a winning smile on their faces while the parents of other students had to struggle to convince them to attend the class.

They had to wait outside the schools till the schools got over, as their wards were reluctant to enter their classrooms on the first day. However, all these activities under ‘Praveshotsav’ were conducted amidst lack of basic facilities in different Government schools in the district Lack of cleanliness was clearly seen in majority of the Government schools, raising doubts over the intention of concerned authorities which claimed to provide all required facilities for poor students in the campus.

According to the highly placed sources in the School Education Department, more than 25 schools from primary upto higher secondary level are there in the district, which are in dilapidated condition and are not suitable to be used anymore. These schools’ buildings in dilapidated condition are dangerous for students’ lives as it can invite any untoward incident any time. District Education Officer, S K Nema informed that, ‘Praveshotsav’ will continue till June 29 to make the students especially newly-enrolled, comfortable in the school atmosphere. Many activities are being conducted in the schools to motivate students towards education and strengthen their bond with the school.
