A 46-year-old woman, suffering from a very rare bone disorder, got new lease of life after she underwent a rare surgery at NH MMI Narayana Multispeciality Hospital here on Wednesday. Consultant Orthopaedics and Joint Replacement Surgeon Dr Ankur Gupta informed that due to disorder abnormal growth and bulging of bones took place, randomly at different parts of her body. For the first time in 2008, she noticed a bulging in her neck which later turned out to be a bone tumour. It was surgically removed at some other centre. Soon after, a cancerous tumour appeared in her skull and clavicle bone (in the front lower part of neck).

Since then, she was being treated at some other centre but to no avail. “When she came to NHMMI Narayana Multispeciality Hospital, she had a large growth on her shoulder bone. The growth had created a wound on her skin which soon got infected with fungus. The wound was so painful that she was not able to lie down and sleep.” told Dr Ankur Gupta. “Surgically removing the abnormal growth and closing the wound was essential because there was a risk of Septicaemia.” he added. After the biopsy analysis of the growth, doctors found that it was a rare Metastatic cancer which was spreading to other bones in the body as well. One such growth was also found in femur also called as thigh bone.

After detailed study, Dr Ankur Gupta concluded that the tumours had grown to such an extent that it was not possible to remove just the tumour and leave the bones intact. He decided that the Scapula (shoulder bone) and the femur had to be removed entirely. But this posed yet another challenge as this was a rare surgery for an even rare condition and there were no case references available at that time. “It was a very high-risk procedure with no assurance of complete recovery.” told Dr Ankur Gupta. “During the surgery we removed her whole femur and placed a metallic prosthetic in its place.

The shoulder bone was also removed.” he added. After the surgery she was suggested to undergo chemotherapy and radiotherapy for treatment of cancer. Doctors suspect that there might be some genetic factor that triggered these cancerous growths, but it cannot be said for sure. With this rare condition, the future of this patient is uncertain as the underlying cancer is still there and can cause abnormal growths in future. But due to these surgeries, the quality of her life improved progressively as she is carrying out her daily routine with minimal assistance.
