Rash driving: Excavator crushes two youths to death, injures one

IN A ghastly mishap, a rashly-driven excavator crushed two youths to death and injured another seriously on Nagpur-Jabalpur Highway in Kalamna area Sunday night. Fearing public wrath, the driver of the excavator fled the spot. The deceased have been identified as Sushant Nagdevte (20), a resident of Lane No 1, Adivasi Colony, and Prithviraj Manoharrao Jadhav (21), a resident of Quarter No 5/2, Housing Board Colony, Raghuji Nagar.
 
Injured Shubham Gunwantrao Wagh (22), a resident of Adivasi Colony, was rushed to the hospital. Sources informed that Sushant had purchased a new Honda CB Hornet motorcycle (MH-49/AX-3295) and took his friends Prithviraj and Shubham on his bike for a long ride on Sunday. They went to Ramtek and visited Gad Mandir. Around 8.30 pm, Sushant, Prithviraj and Shubham were returning to the city.
 
Near Shendre Dhaba on the highway, a recklessly-driven excavator (MH-34/L-6679) coming from wrong side hit them. Sushant, Prithviraj and Shubham fell down. Sushant and Prithviraj came under its wheels and were killed instantaneously. The driver of the ‘killer’ excavator ran away leaving his vehicle at the spot. With serious injuries, Shubham was rushed to the hospital. Staff from Kalamna Police Station arrived at the spot on being informed. Cops sent the bodies to Mayo Hospital for post-mortem. After recording the statement of Shivraj Ranjitrao Deshmukh (24), a resident of Varsha Palace, Vakilpeth, Kalamna Police registered an offence under Sections 279, 304(A) of the Indian Penal Code, read with Sections 134, 177 and 119 of Motor Vehicle Act, against the excavator driver. PSI Jadhav is conducting further investigation.
