MCI declares ‘zero year’ in Ambikapur Medical College

Reduction in medical seats by nearly 200 in state medical colleges has invited criticism from various corners, students’ fraternity in particular, of the society. Alleging state government’s failure to ensure adequate facilities in the medical colleges of State, Akhil Bharatiya Vdyarthi Parishad (ABVP) members on Wednesday staged a demonstration and submitted a memorandum to the deputy collector at Raipur collectorate, addressing the Health Minister T S Singhdeo.
 
The ABVP members alleged that the Congress Government had failed to develop adequate infrastructure at Ambikapur Medical College and subsequently provide medical staff, resulting in declaration of Zero Year in the college. This college has 100 medical seats. Similarly, around 150 seats were reduced at Chandulal Chandrakar Medical College in Bhilai and 50 seats at Raipur Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS). Recently, a team of the Medical Council of India had conducted a survey and found the facilities at these medical colleges dissatisfactory.
 
The MCI informed the state three days back that Ambikapur medical college is being declared Zero Year and seats at Chandulal Chandrakar College are being reduced. Currently, there are 450 seats in private medical colleges and 650 seats in government medical colleges. State secretary Sunny Kesri led the demonstration. Present in the demonstration were Agri Vision national convener Gajendra Tomar, Raipur Division Coordinator Vikas Mittal, Vibhor Thakur, Mohan Pathak, Akash Sharma, Aman Thakur, Rishabh Ogre, Supriya Singh, Yaman Sahu, Vinay Sahu, Vinay Sahu, Tilak Nath, Yash Gupta and Uddesh Khandekhar.
