Mayor demands Rs 100 crore to tackle water crisis in city

With the water crisis reeling in city, Bhopal Mayor Alok Sharma has demanded for Rs 100 crore budget allocation with the higher authorities to facilitate BMC to deal with the emergency situation. On Thursday, Mayor Sharma discussed water crisis issues with Chief Secretary S R Mohanty. He also handed over a memorandum seeking Rs 100 crore budget allocation to ensure proper water supply in all the affected areas. He also urged for high-level meeting in which drinking water crisis can be studied in detailed and substantial measures can be taken.
 
On this occasion, Mayor in council members Mahesh Makhwana, Surendra Badika, Kewal Mishra, Dinesh Yadav, Shankar Makoria, Bhupendra Maali, Zonal president Manoj Rathore, Babulal Yadav, Corporator Sushma Babisa etc were present. In the letter it is also mentioned that in last few years due to less rainfall water bodies in State capital is reeling with water shortage problem. In such scenario even the water sources at Upper Lake, Kolar, Kerwa, Narmada is also declining at faster rate.
 
He also mentioned that water crisis in Bhopal has grown immensely and different sources are used for water supply. The municipal corporation is monitoring the situation and we will ensure supply of water through tankers in affected areas. The Bhopal Municipal Corporation with their limited infrastructure is unable to cope with the water crisis problem. If proper infrastructure and facility can be provided then BMC will be geared up to tackle emergency situation. Proper budget allocation can also be helpful to improvise water supply issues in wards .
 
In the memorandum it is mentioned that Upper Lake which lies on the western side of the capital city and is said to be a major source of water for the region. But owing to less than normal rain and scorching heat, water levels at lake have rapidly dipped, raising concerns of water shortage in the areas of the city which totally depend on it for water supply. It was also mentioned that it can only get filled to 50 per cent of its capacity and if monsoon also gets delayed this year then crucial water crisis problem will be surfaced in Bhopal city. Accordingly, he has raised a demand of Rs 100 crore from the State Government to deal with the crisis. This budget is required to tackle the situation and also to take measures to use water sustainably and help in conserving it.
