The results of National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) the gateway to undergraduate medical as well as dental courses were declared by National Testing Agency (NTA) and many students of Chhattisgarh succeeded to qualify the examination. But in comparison to other States, result of students across Chhattisgarh in this examination is still very poor and saddest part is that, many districts of the State reported zero success in this examination.

Only students of Raipur, Durg, Bilaspur and Korba districts cleared the examination and for students of remaining districts, this examination is still a distant dream to qualify. As per records of NTA which conducted NEET first time (earlier this exam was conducted by CBSE), only 24.3% of total appeared students in the state qualified the examination. If anyone compares with previous year record, than Chhattisgarh showed a growth of 4% as in 2018, only 20.4% students managed to qualify it. But rise of only 4% and qualify of only one fourth students is really a matter of cheerless.

In this regard, there is need of department of school education, medical education and health services to take some steps in improving of the situation, otherwise state will face acute shortage of doctors of its own State in coming years. Last year all of major medical colleges such as Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College of Raipur, Chhattisgarh Institute of Medical Science (CIMS) Bilaspur and others saw over 50% admission of students from other States mainly of Maharashtra, Southern States as well as Uttar Pradesh as in these States, maximum number of students qualified the examination in last three years. But on the other hand, qualified students of the state did not score very good marks and as a result they failed to get admission in top medical colleges of the State.

“We are teaching them all aspects of NEET but still due to national level competitive examination, many students with potential could not clear it. On the other hand students of southern states and also of union territories such as Delhi, Pondicherry and Chandigarh learn the basics of the examination and every year there has been a rise in the number of qualifiers of this examination than Chhattisgarh,” said Dr Akash Sharma, medical practitioner and faculty of lead coaching institute of NEET. At present Chhattisgarh have five government medical colleges, two private medical colleges, one government as well as four private dental colleges and as per rules of Medical Council of India, all of these medical institutes only accept the score of NEET. Due to some irregularities and fails to fulfill the criteria of guidelines of MCI, council rejected the affiliation of Medical College Ambikapur for one year in this session. Owing to poor selection of students in the examination, now with every passing year, there has been a decline in the admission of students of Chhattisgarh in all of medical institutions in the State. Dr A T Dabke, well known medical educationist and retired vice chancellor of Ayush Medical and Health University Raipur stated that actually majority of schools still use outdated curriculum of Biology, Physics and Chemistry and with it, it is really difficult for student to clear NEET which features question of latest curriculum. To prepare students for all national level competitive exams including NEET, there is need to make syllabus with new developments, he added. Although since 2018, Chhattisgarh Board of Secondary Education has introduced NCERT textbooks but still it is a turtle step and there is required to make more measures as well as steps in improvement of syllabus so that students can compete with all national level examinations.
