The expenditure estimated is between Rs 800 crore and Rs 1,000 crore for the contract to be awarded for a period of 10 years

Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), which has so far been dependent on only one agency for garbage collection and transportation, has initiated the process for appointment of two agencies for the task for the city of Nagpur. NMC has floated tender for appointment of two agencies for door-to-door collection of municipal solid waste and its transportation to Bhandewadi dumping yard. The contract will be awarded for a period of 10 years. NMC has estimated the cost of the project to be between Rs 800 crore and Rs 1,000 crore for the contract period. At present, NMC pays to Kanak Resources Management Limited (KRML) at the rate of Rs 1,400/- per tonne.

For the new contract, the rate of Rs 2,100/tonne has been estimated, considering the escalation in operating costs. Going by the present rate, NMC may incur an expenditure of Rs 60 crore per year. However, considering the proposed increase in rate, it will incur expenditure of Rs 80 crore or Rs 90 crore per year on account of gradual increase in rates of fuel used in collection vehicles, wages, etc. KRML’s contract had expired some time ago. It is working on extension till appointment of the new agencies. Each of the two new agencies will have to operate in five different zones.

The new agencies may start work after monsoon season. Soon, a pre-bid qualification meeting of agencies evoking expression of interest will be held in NMC. Later on, the tender process will move forward. Ram Joshi, Additional Municipal Commissioner, meanwhile told ‘The Hitavada’ that NMC was making efforts to reduce collection and transportation of wet garbage to the dumping yard. Instead, it is trying to motivate people to go for composting of the wet degradable waste at home. Already, some people and NGOs have developed baskets/ earthen kits specially designed to get the wet garbage composted at home. The compost thus made could be used in gardens by people.

If people support the idea, it will reduce the expenditure of NMC on paying the agencies collecting garbage on per tonne basis. For, the tonnage of garbage collected and transported will reduce. “Even if 50,000 households out of over six lakh properties in the city go for composting of wet waste, it will save approximately 25,000 kgs of wet waste from being transported and unnecessarily dumped at Bhandewadi,” Joshi said.

MOIL to make available shredder, converter units in NMC gardens In response to the appeal by Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), Manganese Ore India Limited (MOIL) has agreed to make available 10 shredder-and-converter units to be placed at 10 different gardens of NMC. These units will shred the leaves and such degradable dry waste into tiny pieces and the converter will compost the wet waste from the garden as well as nearby area. Each unit has capacity of 500 kgs. Each unit costs around Rs 16 lakh. MOIL will be supplying the units to NMC as part of CSR activity.
