Panini Telang says one of the reasons likely to be Science students have to face 30 tests

Number of students opting Science after Class X or after Class XII have drastically reduced. Students opting Science in higher learning have increased but they stick to limited and top colleges only. Instead, students in large number are opting Commerce or Arts. When ‘The Hitavada’ talked to some experts in this regard they said, Commerce is providing more career opportunities and that too without appearing in multiple tests unlike Science. Dr N Y Khandait, Principal of G S College of Commerce said, “Several students and parents approach us and some of them reveal they don’t want to opt Science for one simple reason.

While pursuing study in Science, they have limited scope. Career opportunities like Chartered Accountant (CA), Company Secretary (CS) are available. In Commerce other branches too have come like Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) and B.Com Computer Applications (BCCA) also. Most of the students and parents don’t want to face Common Entrance Tests (CETs) which they have to do if they opt Science.” “Our college is autonomous and we are running several courses that other colleges can’t without prior permission of University. For example, we will be introducing B.Com (Honours) and B. Com (Accountancy and Finance) from new academic year. Commerce is now growing and I would recommend that students must opt for it,” pointed out Dr Khandait. “If one takes Science, he or she has to appear in 30 examinations on an average till the end of Class XII examination.

They have to appear in TOEFEL four times in Class XI and Class XII, regional Mathematics Olympiad, National Standard Examination in Biology, Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry. Also there are examinations like Indian Council of Agriculture Research, IIT Mains, Advanced. It does not stop here. They have to take examinations like regional mathematics olympiad, NEET, JIPMER, NEST, IISER, BITSAT, AIIMS, SRM, MHTCET etc. There are 221 examinations students have to appear in if the ones conducted in their respective coaching classes are taken into account. It means they have to take 2.21 examinations per week. They lose focus. Parents and wards both have to run from pillar to the post during admissions too. It is stressful for them,” explained Panini Telang, noted Science Teacher. Telang observed that number of toppers in Science reduced by 80 percentile this year.

According to him it doesn’t mean Science result has gone down but number of students opting Science have reduced. Dr Owais Talib, Principal, City Premier College said, “Now business is getting lot of importance. Everybody is started studying Commerce, Economics very keenly. People want to understand these terminologies. This is one reason because of which students are opting Commerce. Commerce has created rays of hopes among job-seekers. CA, CS is one thing but there are other career opportunities too are available in Commerce stream. Students can think of pursuing Civil Services Examination.

Unlike Science, students are relatively feel free in Commerce” Dr Kabir Rawlekar, Vice-Principal of Dr Ambedkar College, Deekshabhoomi stated, “We have all the three main branches viz Science, Commerce and Arts. We do get good number of students in all the three branches. But in last few years, I have seen the takers of Science have reduced. Commerce, Arts are experiencing mad rush in our college. While in Commerce or Arts students can pursue other courses too.”
