“Performing ‘Yoga Asana’ on daily basis is supposed to be the key for living long life. But just by practicing ‘Yoga Asana’ will not help a person to live a satisfactory and purposeful life. Sage Patanjali who created a science of Yoga had mentioned ‘Asana’ (performing different body postures) as the first and preliminary step towards health. The devotees of Janardan Swami should go beyond performing ‘Asana’ and practise the complete science of Yoga.”

This message was given by The Hitavada Editor, Vijay Phanshikar while addressing as a chief guest of fifth anniversary of Vitthal Rukhmini Mandir Yogasana Varga on Saturday. Vitthal Rukhmini Yogasana Varga, affiliated to Janardan Swami Yogabhyasi Mandal, completed five years of its existence. The programme was held to mark its anniversary. Secretary of Janardan Swami Yogabhyasi Mandal, Rambhau Khandwe, presided over. Vice-President of Mandal, Bharati Kusare; Secretary of Shri Vitthal Rukhmini Devasthan, Sneha Nagar, Prabhakar Kalbandhe; President of Sneha Nagar Housing Society, Deepak Munje and Jayant Harde also shared the dais.

Phanshikar beautifully described the science of Yoga by reciting the hymn as: “Yogena Chittasya Padena Vacha; Malam Sharirasya Cha Vaidya Kena; Yopakarotham Pravaram Muninam; Patanjalim Pranjali Ranatosmi” and said, “I bow with folded hands to the supreme sage Patanjali, who eradicated the impurity of mind with Yogashastra, impurity of speech with Vyakarana Mahabhashya, and impurity of body with Ayurveda literature.” “‘Yoga Sadhana’ is a scientific practice of assuring a healthy life. ‘Yoga Asana’ is the first step of this practice.

The meditation conducted initially before performing different body postures is known as ‘Avayava Dhayan’ meaning knowing and focusing on physical body and its different organs. Unfortunately, while practicing ‘Yoga Asana’ the performers consider physical body as mechanical machine,” he added. Phanshikar appealed the Yoga practitioners not to consider physical body as mere machine, because Maharshi Patanjali and Janardan Swami had considered life of an individual as the unison of body, mind, intellect, ego and soul.

He defined two Yoga Sutra as ‘Atha Yoganushasanam’ and ‘Yogashchya Chitta Vrutti Nirodha.’ A true Yoga performer should follow all the scientific equations, follow disciplines of science and by controlling body, mind and intellect achieve the ultimate goal of life, he added. Rambhau Khandwe, termed Yogashashtra as a science of developing self control. Janardan Swami had preached a culture of self control which helps to live with Yogic life style, he added. Pradeep Ghode read out the report. Mrunal Kalbandhe conducted the proceedings and Abhay Diwe proposed a vote of thanks.
