MCI’s fresh curriculum aims to strengthen doctor-patient relation

MEDICAL Council of India (MCI) is going to initiate a new competency-based curriculum at MBBS-level to delicately handle deteriorating doctor-patient relationship in all Government and private medical institutes across the country from August 2019. Even MCI is stung with deteriorating relationship shared between doctors and patients. Recent cases in which doctors were attacked by patients’ attendants or relatives were manhandled by junior doctors, has intensified MCI’s concern.
The new curriculum stresses on medical ethics, better doctor-patient relationship and environment appropriate for learning. The new curriculum will help newly enrolled junior doctors to value and maintain their relation with their patients and nurture it so well that there will leave be no space for such unfortunate incidents between them. Talking to this newspaper, Dean of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Medical College and Hospital Dr Navneet Saxena shared about new curriculum to be rolled out from August 1, 2019. “MCI has changed its curriculum of MBBS and from August 2019. Under the new curriculum, right from day one we will train newly enrolled junior doctors how to respond and behave with their patients, including how to break bad news, to the patients’ relatives.
The Government has taken recent incidents which pushed the noble doctor-patient relationship towards uncertainty, very seriously,” informed Dean Dr Saxena. He further added that, “We still conduct orientation for our newly enrolled junior doctors suggesting them how to deal with patients. But they are working under immense work pressure converting their job challenges into opportunities. Normally they handle more than 100 patients everyday during OPDs only, leave about emergency and in-house patients.
Though the medical administration makes every effort to keep them calm and peaceful but how much they follow our advise and cope with the situation depend on their personalities too.” Fresh curriculum will definitely help strengthen doctor-patient relation. The authorities concerned have already chalked out guidelines. In Jabalpur, we have already hired an image consultant to upgrade junior doctors how to present themselves in front of the society and the mannerisms and etiquettes they must follow while dealing with patients, added Dean Dr Navneet Saxena.
