Merriment turns into tragedy, 1 of 4 friends drowns in river

Four friends had gone on a picnic to New Bhedaghat waterfall
CELEBRATIONS turned into a tragedy for four friends after one of them drowned and another had a narrow escape in New Bhedaghat waterfall under the jurisdiction of Tilwara Police Station. The deceased has been identified as Santosh Jharia (35), son of Daduram Jharia, a resident of Indiranagar, Gorakhpur. Three others present were Bhagwan Das (35), Gopal Rajput and Manoj Patel, a resident of Gupteshwar.
 
 
Tilwara Station House Officer (SHO) Sarika Pandey informed that at around 5.30 pm on Sunday, they were informed by Bhedaghat Police Station about drowning incident in New Bhedaghat. The police team rushed to the spot and fished out body of Santosh Jharia. After panchnama the body was sent for autopsy to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Medical College. She added that according to information four friends, all residents of Gupteshwar and Gorakhpur areas, went on the banks of river Narmada near New Bhedaghat for a picnic.
 
 
Santosh in order to fetch water for cooking went near the river and in a bid to get clean water he entered little deep into the river where he lost his balance and started drowning. In a bid to save Santosh, his friend Bhagwan Das jumped into the river. But he failed to save his friend and somehow saved himself by holding a stone.
 
 
Later, he was rescued by his friends with help of locals and informed Bhedaghat Police station about the incident. Station House Officer Sarika Pandey added that information regarding the incident have been given to senior officials and according to their direction after panchanama the body was sent for autopsy. Police have registered a case under relevant sections and have started further investigations.
