Disappointed by lewd comments passed by boozers, students of Government and private schools on Monday staged a massive demonstration in front of a liquor shop located in Raipur’s Gokul Nagar demanding its immediate closure. However, the agitation came to an end after Chhattisgarh’s Excise Minister Kawasi Lakhma assured of taking necessary action in this regard. Large number of children in school uniform holding placards and accompanied by their parents turned-up to the street demanding immediate closure of liquor shop operational near schools at Gokul Nagar. The agitation, which started around 11 am, concluded after Excise Minister Lakhma directed officials to take requisite action for shifting of liquor shop.

Speaking to The Hitavada, parents of agitating students said that traffic is being interrupted everyday and students, particularly, girls, are unable to walk through this area due to lewd comments passed by boozers. If the situation continues, it would turn very difficult for girls to reach school. Moreover, the liquor shop in the area may emerge as a reason for some children to quit school. “Staging demonstration was the only option left behind us to highlight the plight being faced by large number of students and hit the eardrums of administration. Due to operation of liquor shop close to schools, parents are advising us to skip school on Saturday and also quit coaching classes.

Moreover, fearing crowd of boozers in the area, parents also restricts us to go outside during evening hours,” said a girl student. It may be recalled that after being in opposition for 15 years, Congress in ‘Assembly Election’ rode to landslide victory in Chhattisgarh banking on one of the key issues of banning liquor across the state. In its election campaign, Congress leaders prominently highlighted the promise of banning liquor in Chhattisgarh kept in their election manifesto
