HOME-buyers across the country should rejoice at the Supreme Court’s landmark verdict cancelling registration of the renowned real estate firm Amrapali Group under the Real Estate Registration Act (RERA) and ousting it from prime properties in New Delhi’s NCR. The judgement is first of its kind from the apex court and will certainly have a thundering impact on real estate sector which is controlled by realtors notorious for harassing home-buyers by not adhering to deadlines. Despite various court orders and warnings, big realtors have failed to complete projects in a time-bound manner as contemplated in RERA. In most cases, the poor and middle-class home-buyers have been left in the lurch as the realtors divert their money to other projects, thus playing a fraud on the unsuspecting consumers. The Supreme Court verdict will set the ball rolling for Centre and State authorities to crack down hard on such elements. Next logical step for the authorities is to implement the order in right spirit and provide much-needed succour to the home-buyers.

FAKE UNIVERSITIES

THE University Grants Commission (UGC) has done a yeoman’s service to the cause of the students by declaring the list of unrecognised self-styled universities. In a recent notification, the UGC has cautioned students and parents not to take admissions in these self-proclaimed universities which have no sanction of the controlling authority. Thereby the UGC has stopped young people’s lives from being ruined and from being fleeced by these institutions. Most of these institutions are located in Uttar Pradesh while several other states have also their share of such bogus educational facades. These institutions, created merely to mint money, function under very attractive names to entice gullible students and parents. Their fraud comes to notice during examination times when students fail to get their admission cards or when they are rejected by employers for lack of degrees from recognised institutions or universities. Since large number of such institutions have come up in several states it points to lax control.
