Monsoon covers entire C’garh

THE eagerly awaited Southwest Monsoon finally covered the entire State giving much needed respite from the parched conditions and infused life into the slow paced farming activities. During the last 24 hours, wide spread showers had its maximum concentration over central part of Chhattisgarh while the extreme north and southern districts of Surguja and Bastar recorded isolated showers. With the continuous drizzles across State for last 24 hours, the overall 29 per cent deficient rainfall as on Monday has been reduced to 23 per cent. Against the normal rainfall of 215.0mm in the ongoing rainy season that commenced from June 1, Chhattisgarh received 166.5mm rainfall till July 2.
 
Similarly, Raipur though had good cloud cover and favourable conditions during the month long Monsoon with showers recorded in its outer periphery, finally steady rains gave ample opportunity to the city denizens to rejoice. The massive 43 per cent deficit of rains in the capital city finally recovered with the deficient percentage being reduced to 32 per cent in just 24 hours of light rain. However, the extreme Northern district of Surguja maintained the record of largest deficient area with rain deficit amounting to 70 per cent, receiving 79.1mm rainfall against the normal of 263.6 mm.
 
If figures are any yardstick, Rajnandgaon is close second to Surguja with 59 per cent deficit, but overall received 76.8mm rainfall during the ongoing rainy season (June 1 to July 2) which is lower than the showers received by most deficient district of Surguja. Among the 27 districts in State, six districts recorded more than the normal Monsoon showers. Kondagaon was the highest rain surplus district receiving 66 per cent more rainfall, recording 352.3mm rains against the normal of 212.4mm. It was closely followed with Dhamtari district, popularly known as the rice bowl of the state recording 314.4mm rainfall against the normal of 194.4mm, an excess of 62 per cent.
 
The main rainfall received in different areas include Baderajpur and Jaijaipur received 100mm followed with Pusour and Basna – 90mm, Pamgarh Champa, Dabhra, Saraipali, Kashdol, Malkharoda and Sarangarh – 70mm each, Arang, Shakti and Raigarh – 60mm, Abhanpur, Churra, Mainpur, Mahasamund, Pendra, Marwahi, Shivrinarayan and Kharsia – 50mm, Baloda Bazar, Bhatapara, Rajim, Magarlod, Pithora, Thankhamariah, Kawardha, Bilha, Gharghoda, Baramkela, Odgi, Manandragarh and Ramanujnagar- 40mm while many areas across the state received less than 40mm rainfall on Tuesday.
 
Senior Meteorologist of Meteorological Center, Raipur H P Chandra said that a trough lies from North West Rajasthan to the low pressure area persists over North Odisha and adjoining Jharkhand on Tuesday. It is likely to near Chhattisgarh in the west north-west ward direction in the evening hours. Thus, rainfall activities will decrease in the surrounding areas of low pressure area, Chanda added. In the state-wide forecast, heavy rainfall or thundershowers are very likely at isolated places over Chhattisgarh on July 3. The sky will be generally cloudy with few spells of light to moderate rain or thundershowers are very likely in Raipur on Wednesday.
