Torrential rains throw life out of gear in city

Torrential rains, which lashed the city for hours, inundated many areas in the city, including posh localities, on Tuesday evening. People living in low-lying areas were at receiving end as rain water gushed into their dwellings. All important squares, main roads, colony streets got waterlogged. Drains and nullahs swelled and inundated residential areas and markets. The heavy showers, along with high velocity winds, also disrupted power supply in some areas. Though no report of house collapse was received, but people living in mud-made house had to face hell-like conditions as water gushed into their dwellings created huge loss. The heavy rain put JMC employees on toes.
 
The flood control room of JMC received plethora of complaints of water-logging from different areas of the city. In last few days, people had to face humid weather. On Tuesday morning, thick black clouds hovered over the city and it rained heavily for hours. Till 8.30 pm, the city had received 108.2 mm rainfall (4.26 inches), which increased total rainfall figure to 179.2 mm (7 inches).
 
As per Weather Department, maximum temperature on Tuesday was recorded at 32.6 degrees Celsius, while minimum was 23.2 degrees Celsius. The relative humidity on Tuesday morning was recorded at 84 per cent, while in evening, it was 98 percent. However, during last year, the maximum temperature was recorded at 33.2 degrees Celsius on the same day, while minimum was 25.4 degrees Celsius. The rain was 5 mm and total rainfall was 91 mm. The weatherman informed that similar condition would continue and the city would receive more rain in next 48 hours.
 
The citizens ultimately heaved a sigh of relief as monsoon become active over the region. However, heavy showers also created much inconvenience to people of many areas as their localities got waterlogged and even water gushed into dwellings of people living in low-lying areas. The power cut also added to the problems of the residents. The rainwater, which clogged everywhere in the city, exposed the hollow claim of Jabalpur Municipal Corporation (JMC) and pre-monsoon cleaning drive. The first heavy rain swelled all important nullahs.
 
The big drains overflowed and inundated nearby localities. The weatherman informed that, rain or thundershowers would occur at almost places in the division in next 24 hours. The areas, which got submerged in knee-deep water following heavy rains, were Garha, Adhartal, Baldevbagh, Damoh Naka, Sangam Colony, Ambedkar Chowk, Shanti Nagar, Agha Chowk, Shiv Nagar, Karmeta, Jagdamba Colony, State Bank Colony, Anand Nagar, Chungi Chowki, Kanchanpur, Gohalpur, Gurandi Market, Sneh Nagar, Ramnagar, Agrawal Colony, Cherital, Jankinagar College, Saraswati Colony, Ganga Nagar, etc.
