Taking another step forward towards environment conservation, Swami Vivekananda Airport (SVA) unveiled two automatic PET Bottle Shredder Machines, here on Wednesday. The installation of machines at Security Hold Area (SHA), one each on ground and top floor respectively, generated a lot of appreciation and attention from the passengers, particularly those close to nature. Officials of Airports Authority of India (AAI) let the machines unveiled at the hands two female passengers Meenal and Sangeeta Shrivastava, who flew to destination Indore and Bangalore respectively.

Dubbing as ‘Swacch Bharat Recycling Machines’, Raipur Airport Director (APD) Rakesh Ranjay Sahay said, the equipment can recycle plastic bottles into recyclable raw material. “The machine powered with 2 Horse Power motor, can crush on average 25 bottles per minute with one bottle taking a maximum 20 seconds, wherein it can also shred bottles of 2 litres capacity. Moreover, the machine has ample storage capacity to accommodate 1,000 shredded bottles and thereby ensuring there no littering of plastic bottle inside the airport terminal building, which witnesses 3,000 passengers flow per day,” he added.

According to APD, the machines were secured through tender floated in May 1st week wherein cost of each unit reached Rs 1.03 lakh and finally they were set operational during the real time operations at the SVA. “Designed and created by an Ahmedabad-based company, the benefit of the recycling machines is that the plastic that goes to landfill or scrap dealer gets reduced automatically. The machine has very low maintenance cost, which would be covered by the supplier,” he explained. APD Sahay also said that the AAI may decide further to install more such machines at other key spots of the airport since Raipur Airport happens to be one of the fastest growing airports in terms of passenger traffic in the country.
